Chapter 7 - The Viper’s Final Strike

A parasite rarely starves quietly. While Daniel was breaking down in lobby of Vanguard Financial, Sophie was orchestrating something far more venomous in the shadows.

My sister had always possessed a lethal combination of arrogance and jealousy, but her recent descent into poverty had sharpened those traits into absolute malice. She had watched my rise to Chief Operating Officer from the gutter, scrolling through my public social media profiles from a burner phone, seething with a rage that bordered on insanity. She genuinely believed that my success was stolen from her, that the universe had somehow made a mistake by rewarding me instead of her.

Two weeks after Daniel’s pathetic ambush, Michael and I were in the Vanguard executive war room, preparing to finalize the massive Virtual KOC acquisition. The room was tense, filled with high-level investors and our top legal counsel.

My encrypted tablet vibrated violently on the mahogany table.

It was an emergency alert from our cybersecurity division. I opened the file, and my blood ran completely cold. Someone had just leaked a heavily fabricated, heavily doctored dossier to three major financial news outlets. The dossier contained forged emails and manipulated banking ledgers suggesting that Vanguard Financial’s new AI division was actually a front for international money laundering, and that I—the newly minted COO—was the architect of the fraud.

"Michael," I whispered, sliding the tablet across the table.

Michael scanned the document, his dark eyes instantly hardening into a mask of pure, protective fury. "This is a targeted hit. They are trying to tank the acquisition and force the board to suspend you pending a federal investigation."

"Who has the access to fabricate internal ledgers like this?" one of the investors demanded, the panic already rising in his voice.

I stared at the specific formatting of the forged emails. There was a microscopic, distinct error in the header codes—a formatting quirk that only one person I knew consistently made when she used to help me format my college papers a decade ago.

"It’s Sophie," I said, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "She must have partnered with Marcus Vance."

Marcus Vance was a disgraced, rival venture capitalist Michael had legally crushed two years ago. He had the money and the motive to destroy Vanguard, but he didn't have the personal venom required to craft a smear campaign this vicious. Sophie did. She had sold her soul to my enemy just to watch me burn.

"They think they can use fabricated digital smoke to trigger a panic," I said, standing up, my mind instantly shifting into combat mode. I looked around the room at the terrified investors. "Nobody panics. We do not issue a defensive press release. We are an AI and digital architecture firm. We fight fire with a nuclear bomb."
