Chapter 12 - The Trojan Horse

For the next forty-eight hours, I played the role of the blissful, deeply in love fiancée to absolute perfection. I smiled at Michael over morning coffee. I kissed him goodbye when he left for the executive offices. And the moment his car cleared the security gates, I turned our master suite into a fortified digital war room.
I did not hire an outside private investigator. In the world of billionaires, loyalty is a commodity that is easily bought and sold. I had to hunt in the dark. I bypassed the Aegis Wealth corporate firewall and dove directly into the raw, underlying traffic data of Michael’s personal and executive accounts.
I initiated a phantom trace on his encrypted phone, a skill I had quietly acquired during the hostile takeover of my previous company. The surveillance photo showed him in a parking garage. I needed to know exactly where that garage was, and why he was meeting with the very man who had tried to destroy me.
As I ripped through layers of encrypted digital ledgers, a horrifying pattern began to emerge. Michael hadn't been in London. His private jet had been diverted to a shadow airstrip in the Cayman Islands. And Aegis Wealth—my life’s work, the company I had built to empower women—had quietly transferred seventy-five million dollars of liquid capital into an offshore shell company completely off the books. The authorization signature on the transfer was mine.
But I had never signed it.
The walls of my beautiful, two-story sanctuary suddenly felt like a cage. The realization hit me with the force of a freight train. Michael wasn't just hiding a meeting. He was systematically draining my empire, using my own digital signature to launder millions into the accounts of the men I had put behind bars. Marcus Vance wasn't a defeated enemy; he was Michael’s silent partner.
Michael had played the long game. He had offered me the unwavering support, the emotional rock, and the breathtaking diamond ring, all to blind me while he dismantled my company from the inside.
The heavy mahogany door of the bedroom swung open.
Michael stood in the doorway. He wasn't smiling. His eyes, usually so warm and full of love, were dead and cold. He held a secondary tablet in his hand—the master alert system for the house’s internal network.
"You triggered the firewall," Michael said, his voice dropping all pretense of affection. It was a terrifying, hollow sound. "I spent two years building your trust, Elena. I bought you the perfect house. I gave you the perfect ring. All you had to do was stay quiet and play the happy bride."

"You forged my signature to steal seventy-five million dollars," I whispered, standing up, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. "You partnered with Marcus."
"Marcus is my brother, Elena," Michael revealed, a cruel, mocking smirk touching his lips. "Half-brother, to be precise. When you ruined his life, you took millions from our family trust. I was just taking it back. And now that you've accessed the shadow ledgers, the federal authorities are going to see your digital signature all over an international money-laundering syndicate. You are going to go to federal prison, and I am going to take full executive control of Aegis Wealth. As your loving husband, of course."
