Chapter 4 - The Mistress’s Reality

"Fired?" Vanessa shrieked, the reality of the situation finally piercing her shock. She looked at Daniel, her eyes wide with a sudden, vicious clarity. "Daniel, is she telling the truth? Are you broke?"

"Vanessa, wait, I can fight this in court—" Daniel pleaded, reaching for her.

"Fight it with what?" I asked. "Your personal accounts were frozen yesterday pending the fraud investigation into the company expenses you've been using to fund your hotel weekends with Vanessa. You have no company, no house, and as of today, no line of credit."

Vanessa backed away from him as if he were suddenly contagious. The handsome, successful, wealthy CEO she thought she had stolen was gone. In his place stood a bankrupt, unemployed man facing a massive legal battle and looming child support payments.

"I'm not doing this," Vanessa snapped, dropping her designer purse over her shoulder. "I'm not going down with you, Daniel. Don't call me."

She turned on her heel and sprinted out of the examination room, leaving the door swinging wide open.
