Chapter 14 - The New York AmbushThe grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York was a masterpiece of crystal, gold leaf, and terrified billionaires. The annual Atlantic Maritime Gala was the premier event of the shipping elite, and tonight, it was entirely under the thumb of Cassandra Vance.

Marcus, Tobias, and I did not sneak through the service elevators. We walked through the main bronze doors with the unyielding, terrifying confidence of conquerors. I wore a striking, backless gown of midnight-blue velvet, my posture immaculate, projecting an aura of untouchable power. Marcus walked beside me in a bespoke black tuxedo, his imposing physical presence clearing a path through the crowded foyer, while Tobias moved easily beside us, completely unburdened by the past.

As we entered the main ballroom, the string quartet was playing a soft, classical waltz. Standing near the center dais, surrounded by nervous European investors and private security guards, was Cassandra Vance. She wore her signature white Chanel suit, holding a flute of champagne, radiating an air of absolute, unearned triumph.

She spotted us immediately. Her aristocratic face curved into a condescending, razor-sharp smile. She set her champagne glass down on a passing tray and walked directly toward us, her heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor.

"Mrs. Sterling," Cassandra purred, loudly enough for the surrounding executives to hear. "I am genuinely shocked you had the stomach to show your face here tonight. Did you come to beg for a minority stake in your own company, or did you simply want to watch me sign away your remaining shipping lanes?"

The surrounding crowd of maritime executives held their collective breath, watching the confrontation unfold with wide, horrified eyes.

I didn't flinch. I didn't break eye contact. I stopped a mere two feet away from her, letting the heavy, suffocating silence stretch for three agonizing seconds.

"I came to deliver a message, Cassandra," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the acoustically flawless hall.

Cassandra chuckled, a dry, dismissive sound. "And what message could a provincial shipyard owner possibly have for a Vance?"

"Your wire transfer cleared this afternoon," I smiled, a slow, predatory expression that finally made a flicker of genuine unease cross her icy features. "Thank you for settling the thirty-million-dollar lien."

"You paid the debt," she shrugged arrogantly. "It changes nothing. The collateral—"

"The collateral is secured," I interrupted smoothly. "In fact, your entire holding company is completely secured. By the United States Department of Justice."

Cassandra’s smile vanished entirely. "What did you say?"

Before she could process the words, Tobias pulled a slim tablet from his jacket pocket and tapped the master broadcast button.

The massive, eighty-foot ultra-high-definition digital screens behind the main stage—screens that had been displaying the Apex Maritime corporate logo—violently glitched. The corporate emblem dissolved into static, replaced instantly by an official, un-redacted federal asset seizure notice and the real-time financial ledger showing her accounts locked at zero.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"

The grand doors of the ballroom slammed open. Dozens of heavily armed federal agents from the White Collar Crimes and International Financial Fraud divisions flooded the hall. Laser sights danced across the custom-tailored suits of Cassandra’s private security detail, who immediately raised their hands in total surrender.

Two lead agents marched straight through the parting crowd, heading directly toward the center of the room.

Cassandra staggered backward, her face draining of all color as she looked up at the massive screens broadcasting her instantaneous financial ruin. "This is a mistake! My accounts are untouchable! I am a Vance!"

"Cassandra Vance, you are under arrest for international wire fraud, securities manipulation, and corporate extortion," the lead special agent barked, grabbing her arms and violently snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

The immaculate white Chanel suit was instantly ruined as she was jerked backward by the federal agents. She let out a shriek of absolute, unadulterated rage, glaring at me with eyes full of murder as they dragged her past the stunned, silent crowd of billionaires.

"You can't do this!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "I will destroy you! I will tear this country apart!"

"You should have stayed in Geneva, Cassandra," I called out calmly, crossing my arms. "America is closed to predators."
