Chapter 6 - The Cleansing Fire

The flash of police sirens painted the dry-dock in frantic bursts of red and blue, casting long, fractured shadows across the hull of the massive freighter towering above us. I stood at the edge of the stage, the adrenaline that had fueled my resurrection slowly giving way to a profound, icy calm. I watched as Garrett, the man who had kissed my forehead before locking me in a sinking car, was shoved into the back of a federal cruiser. He was weeping. It was a pathetic, hollow sound that echoed off the steel of the shipyard.
"They're taking Richard into custody at his country club right now," Tobias said, stepping up beside me. He leaned heavily on the railing, stretching his legs. After years of feigning paralysis to keep Garrett and Richard from viewing him as a threat, the simple act of standing upright was a victory in itself. "The FBI raided his home fifteen minutes ago. We got them, sis. We actually got them."
"We cut off the head of the snake," I corrected softly, turning to face the sprawling expanse of the Sterling Shipyard. "But Richard and Garrett didn't run this embezzlement ring alone. You don't launder hundreds of millions of dollars through international shipping channels without a board of directors looking the other way."
I walked down the steps of the podium, ignoring the frantic shouts of the press cordoned off by Marcus and our loyal security team. I marched directly toward the VIP seating area, where the surviving members of the shipyard's executive board were huddled together in terrified, whispering clusters. These were the men and women who had smiled at my parents' funeral, the same executives who had happily approved Garrett’s fraudulent contracts while I was fighting for my life.
"Nobody leaves this facility," I commanded, my voice slicing through the humid summer air like a blade. The executives froze, turning to look at me with wide, panicked eyes. "Tobias and I have already submitted the un-redacted financial ledgers to the SEC. We know exactly which offshore accounts the missing capital was diverted to, and we know exactly whose signatures authorized those transfers."
"You can't hold us here!" shouted Arthur Vance, the senior vice president of logistics. His face was flushed with indignant rage. "This is a gross violation of our rights! We had nothing to do with Garrett’s psychotic actions!"
"You approved the purchase of ghost freighters that never existed, Arthur," Tobias countered smoothly, walking up to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me. "You took a five-million-dollar kickback routed through a Cayman shell company to expedite the paperwork. The FBI is pulling the wire transfers as we speak."
Arthur’s face drained of all color. His knees buckled slightly, and he collapsed back into his folding chair.

"The infection in this company stops today," I declared, looking at each of the corrupt executives in the eye. "You have two choices. You can walk out of those gates right now, and I will let the federal prosecutors dismantle your lives, seize your assets, and throw you in prison for the rest of your natural lives. Or, you can walk into the main conference room, hand over your absolute resignations, surrender your equity back to the founding trust, and turn state's evidence against Richard’s shadow investors."
The silence on the dry-dock was absolute. One by one, the impeccably dressed executives lowered their heads. Without another word of protest, Arthur Vance stood up and began the long, humiliating walk toward the main office building, followed by the rest of the board. The empire was finally, entirely, mine.
