Chapter 7 - The Apex PredatorI didn't open the envelope until I was safely locked inside my home office, the heavy oak doors shut tight. Julian, the brilliant, fiercely protective corporate attorney I had been quietly dating for the past year, sat across from my desk.

Julian was a former federal prosecutor who had built a reputation for dismantling corrupt politicians. He was a man who understood the shadows of D.C. better than anyone, and he looked at me not with pity, but with profound, unwavering respect.
I slid the documents across the desk. Julian put on his reading glasses, his jaw clenching tighter with every page he turned.
"It’s a flawless frame job," Julian said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "The incorporation dates align perfectly with the years you were legally married. The digital signatures match your exact biometric stroke patterns. Sterling must have harvested your digital signature from your joint tax returns years ago and stored it as an insurance policy."
"If he releases these to the DOJ, what happens?" I asked, wrapping my hands tightly around a cup of black coffee, trying to stop them from shaking.
"The FBI will have no choice but to open a formal investigation," Julian explained grimly. "Even if we eventually prove the signatures are forged, the process will take years. The media will leak the investigation. Your board of directors at Aura Media will be forced to suspend you. Your assets will be frozen. It’s a scorched-earth tactic."
"Sloane wants five million dollars to hand over the hard drives that prove the forgery," I said, pacing the length of my office. "If I pay her, she disappears, and the threat is neutralized."
"If you pay a blackmailer, you are on their payroll for the rest of your life," Julian countered sharply. He stood up, walking over to me and placing his large, warm hands on my shoulders. "Sterling is a narcissist backed into a corner. He doesn't just want the money. He wants to know he can still control you. He wants to know that even from a prison cell, he owns your fear."
I looked up into Julian’s dark, intelligent eyes. "I am not a victim anymore, Julian. I refuse to let that monster back into my head. But how do we stop a ghost?"
Julian let out a slow, terrifying smile. It was the smile of an apex predator who had just spotted his prey.
"We don't stop the ghost," Julian whispered. "We give the ghost exactly what it wants, right out in the open, and we let it choke on it."
Julian immediately went into action. He called in his private team of ex-federal investigators. For the next twenty-four hours, they completely swept my house and my corporate offices for electronic surveillance. If Sterling had orchestrated this frame job, there was a high probability he was still monitoring my reactions to see if the extortion was working.
At 3:00 AM, my phone buzzed. It was Julian.
"We found it," Julian’s voice crackled through the secure line. "There is a micro-transmitter wired into the primary junction box of your home office's Wi-Fi router. It’s military-grade. Sterling’s private fixers must have installed it months ago. Every conversation in your office is being recorded and transmitted."
"Rip it out," I commanded, a surge of absolute violation washing over me.
"No," Julian stopped me. "If we rip it out, they know we’re onto them. Right now, this bug is their only window into your life. In war, the greatest weapon you can wield is controlling the information your enemy receives. We are going to feed them a script."
The plan was incredibly dangerous. It required absolute precision and nerves of steel.
The next afternoon, Julian and I sat in my home office, fully aware that Sterling’s operatives were listening to every single word.
"Julian, I don't know what to do!" I cried out, intentionally injecting my voice with raw, hysterical panic. I paced heavily across the floorboards to make the audio convincing. "The documents Sloane gave me are perfect. If the FBI sees them, I’ll lose the kids!"
"You need to calm down," Julian replied, playing his part flawlessly, sounding stressed and defeated. "We can't fight this in court. The digital signatures are too good. We have to pay the ransom."
"I don't have five million in liquid cash just sitting around!" I sobbed into my hands. "I have to pull it from the company’s emergency reserve accounts. I’ll initiate the wire transfer to the Cayman Island offshore account Sloane provided. I’ll do it tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. I just want this nightmare to end."

I slammed my hands on the desk, effectively concluding the performance.
Julian and I looked at each other in the dead silence of the room. We had just bait the trap. Now, we had to see if the rats would bite.
