Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Lie

"Explain?" I repeated, my voice dropping to a dangerous, clinical calm. "Explain what, Daniel? The life insurance payout your mother collected? The bankruptcy you left me to fight? Or the fact that you let me kneel in the mud and weep over an empty wooden box?"
Sophie pulled her baby closer to her chest, her eyes darting between us in sheer panic. "David, what is she talking about? Who is Daniel? What is happening?"
Daniel took a step toward Sophie, his hands raised in a placating gesture, but he couldn't meet her eyes. "Soph, just listen to me. I had to do it. The consulting firm was drowning. The creditors were threatening us. I was going to go to jail for the doctored ledgers. My mother and I... we found a way out. A clean slate."
"A clean slate," I echoed, the words tasting like ash. "You stole three million dollars in offshore loans, faked a car crash in a flooded ravine, and left your wife to face the FBI, the creditors, and the public humiliation of losing our home."

Celeste stepped in front of her son, her spine rigid, her face a mask of aristocratic fury. "You were always too rigid, Elena! You wouldn't have understood. You would have turned him in to the Attorney General's office yourself. We did what we had to do to protect this family!"
"You protected yourselves," I corrected her, staring at the woman who had cried on my shoulder at the funeral. "And you paid for your new life with my destruction."
