Celeste sneered, stepping toward the dresser where my phone sat. "You have nothing, Elena. A wild story. You think anyone is going to believe you? We have new identities, clean credit, an impeccable life here."
"I don't need a wild story, Celeste," I said, tapping the stack of manila folders I had brought for Sophie. "I have the audit files."
Daniel froze.
"Did you really think it was a coincidence that I transferred to Voss Financial?" I asked, looking dead into Daniel's eyes. "Did you think I just stumbled into this nursery by accident?"
I watched the blood drain entirely from Daniel's face.
"Two months ago, I was reviewing flagged accounts for the firm," I explained, slipping into the cold, methodical persona I had perfected at the Attorney General's office. "I saw a series of shell company transfers originating from the Cayman Islands, filtering into a local LLC owned by a 'David Grant.' The laundering pattern was identical to the one you used at your old consulting firm. It was your digital fingerprint, Daniel. I tracked it to Sophie. I volunteered to bring her the maternity leave files just to confirm."
