Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

"You bitch," Celeste hissed, lunging for my phone.
I didn't flinch. I let her snatch the phone off the dresser.
"Go ahead, Celeste," I smiled. "Look at the screen."
Celeste looked down. The phone wasn't recording a voice memo. It was displaying an active, ongoing phone call. The screen read: Special Agent Marcus Thorne - Financial Crimes Division.
My old boss.
"Thorne has been listening for the last ten minutes," I told them, my voice ringing with total victory. "He heard the confession. He heard the explanation of the offshore accounts. And his agents are currently pulling up to the front curb."
Outside, the unmistakable wail of police sirens pierced the quiet suburban afternoon, growing louder and more urgent by the second.

Sophie let out a broken sob. "Get out," she screamed at Daniel. "Get out of my house! Don't you ever look at me or my son again!"
"Sophie, please!" Daniel begged, falling to his knees.
