Chapter 5 - The Queen's Gambit

The fallout was swifter and more brutal than even I had anticipated.

Gavin was physically escorted out of the building by security, carrying his belongings in a small cardboard box while the local news cameras flashed furiously in his face. By Monday morning, he was officially indicted on multiple counts of wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny.

When Camila discovered that Gavin was not only fired but completely bankrupt, facing years in federal prison, her profound "love" for him evaporated instantly. She packed up her luxury, company-funded apartment in the middle of the night and fled the state, leaving Gavin entirely alone to face the catastrophic ruin of his own making.

Because of the overwhelming evidence of his financial abuse and criminal fraud, the divorce was a slaughter. I was granted full, unquestionable custody of Mia. Gavin was stripped of every asset he had tried to hide, left with nothing but mounting legal debt and a ruined reputation.

Six months later, the air in the Summit Crest executive suite felt entirely different.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the corner office, looking out over the sprawling Boston skyline. I was wearing a sharply tailored, emerald-green designer suit—a far cry from the beige, invisible dresses Gavin had forced upon me. The heavy, suffocating anxiety that used to dictate my every purchase was gone, replaced by the quiet, unshakeable confidence of a woman who had reclaimed her empire.

There was a soft knock on the heavy glass door. Marcus Sterling stepped into the office, holding a leather portfolio.

"Good morning, Madam Chairwoman," Marcus smiled warmly. "The board has unanimously approved your new initiative for the quarterly budget. And the PR team wanted me to let you know that our stock has fully recovered from the... unpleasantness last year. The market loves a strong comeback story."

"Thank you, Marcus," I replied, walking over to my massive oak desk—my father's desk.

I sat down in the high-backed leather chair, glancing at a silver framed photograph resting near my computer. It was a picture of Mia, laughing brightly in the sunshine of our newly renovated backyard. She was safe, she was happy, and she would never, ever be taught to shrink herself for the comfort of an arrogant man.

Gavin had thought my trust was a weakness. He had believed that keeping me confined to a strict budget and a small suburban world would make me easy to control. But he had forgotten the most dangerous rule of the game.

When you force a woman to learn how to survive on nothing, she becomes completely unstoppable once she finally realizes she owns everything.
