Chapter 7 - The Apex Predator

The emergency board meeting was a masterclass in psychological warfare. Richard sat at the head of the long mahogany table, a seat that rightfully belonged to me, while Camila sat beside him, preening like a queen who had just conquered a peasant village.
I sat directly across from them, my posture immaculate, projecting an aura of absolute, unbothered power. Inside, my mind was racing through a thousand different battle strategies. Richard thought he had me cornered. He believed that because I had been a subjugated wife for ten years, I would crumble under the weight of a ruthless corporate billionaire.
He had fundamentally underestimated the monster the trauma had turned me into.
"The transition will be swift," Richard announced to the terrified board members. "Elena will be transitioning to a silent advisory role, effective immediately."
"I am not transitioning anywhere, Richard," I interrupted, my voice slicing through the heavy air like a scalpel. I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the polished wood. "You are attempting to enforce a fraudulent contract signed by a convicted felon. If you think I am going to hand over my father’s legacy because you found a loophole in the fine print, you are delusional."
Camila rolled her eyes, letting out a dramatic sigh. "Oh, Elena, please stop embarrassing yourself. You lost. Just take your little payout and go take care of your kid. The adults are talking."
I didn't even look at Camila. I kept my eyes entirely locked on Richard. "I am going to destroy you for this. Both of you."
I stood up, buttoned my emerald blazer, and walked out of the boardroom without another word, leaving them to their hollow victory. I didn't go to my car to cry. I went straight to the subterranean parking garage and pulled out my encrypted secondary phone. I didn't need a corporate lawyer; I needed a mercenary.
I dialed a number that Marcus had given me months ago, a number for emergencies that required operating entirely in the gray areas of the law.
"Elias Thorne," a deep, gravelly voice answered on the second ring.
Elias was a legend in the darkest corners of Wall Street. He was a corporate fixer, a man who specialized in dismantling hostile takeovers, exposing offshore tax evasion, and utterly ruining corrupt billionaires. He was notoriously expensive and fiercely selective about his clients.
"Mr. Thorne. My name is Elena," I said smoothly as I climbed into the back of my waiting SUV. "I need you to dismantle Vanguard Holdings. I want Richard Sterling’s entire empire burned to the ground, and I want the ashes handed to me in a jar."
There was a low, appreciative chuckle on the other end of the line. "I like your tone, Elena. My retainer is two million dollars, wired to a blind trust in the Caymans. I’ll meet you at your estate at midnight. Have the loan documents ready."
When Elias arrived at my home, the air in my living room instantly shifted. He was dangerously handsome, radiating a dark, intense energy that commanded absolute respect. He didn't look at me with pity, nor did he try to patronize me. He looked at me as a complete equal.
I poured us both a glass of scotch and laid the fraudulent loan documents out on the coffee table.
Elias reviewed the paperwork, his dark eyes tracking the dense paragraphs with terrifying speed. "Richard is using a classic shell-game maneuver," Elias murmured, tapping the signature line. "He didn't use his own clean money to fund Gavin’s fifty-million-dollar loan. Billionaires like Richard don't liquidate assets for quick cash; they use leverage. He pulled this money from an offshore syndicate."
"Which means if we can prove the original funds were dirty, the contract is void under federal anti-money laundering laws," I realized, a thrilling, dangerous spark igniting in my chest.
"Exactly," Elias smiled, a predatory gleam in his eye that matched my own. "But Richard covers his tracks perfectly. The digital paper trail is locked behind a dozen Swiss proxies. The only person who knows the exact routing numbers Richard used to initiate the transfer is the man who received it."
"Gavin," I whispered.
May you like
"Gavin," Elias confirmed. "And since Gavin is currently rotting in a federal penitentiary, getting him to talk is going to require a very specific kind of leverage."
I took a slow sip of my scotch, staring at the blazing fire in the hearth. "He’s my ex-husband, Elias. Leave his leverage to me."
