Chapter 14 - The Phantom GalaBy the time we landed back in New York, the sun had set, plunging the city into a freezing, sleet-filled darkness.

Agent Harrison and a specialized cyber-team met us at the abandoned brownstone in Brooklyn. The house was dark, smelling of dust and neglected memories. I walked up the creaking stairs to the master bedroom, the flashlights of the federal agents cutting through the pitch black.

I pointed to the floorboards beneath the bay window.

An agent pried the wood up with a crowbar. Nestled in the insulation was a heavy, waterproof Pelican case. Inside was a sleek, military-grade solid-state drive.

Harrison plugged it into his field laptop. His eyes widened as the decrypted files flooded the screen.

"It’s a goldmine," Harrison breathed in awe. "It’s the original source code. The metadata proves unequivocally that the documents leaked to the press yesterday were forged remotely from an IP address in Geneva. Megan, you’re cleared. The warrant is dead."

A wave of profound, staggering relief washed over me. But the relief was instantly replaced by a cold, apocalyptic rage.

"I don't just want my name cleared, Harrison," I said, my voice echoing in the empty, dusty room. "I want Elena Rostova."

"She’s a ghost, Megan. She doesn't set foot on American soil," Harrison warned.

"She is on American soil," Jonathan interjected, looking up from his own encrypted tablet. He had been monitoring elite aviation manifests for the last twelve hours. "Elena’s private jet landed at Teterboro Airport three hours ago. She’s hosting a silent art auction tonight at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. It’s an exclusive, closed-door event designed to launder physical assets into untraceable crypto."

"She came to watch my arrest," I deduced, a dark, razor-sharp smile slowly spreading across my face. "She wants to gloat."

"We can't raid the Pierre without a warrant, and getting a federal judge to sign off on an international billionaire at 9:00 P.M. is impossible," Harrison said, frustrated.

"We don't need a raid," I whispered, taking Jonathan’s hand. "We just need an invitation."

One hour later, I stepped out of an armored SUV in front of the Pierre Hotel. I did not wear the subdued, accommodating clothes of a terrified victim. I wore a sweeping, backless gown of liquid-gold sequins, paired with a diamond choker. I looked like absolute, untouchable power.

Jonathan walked beside me in a razor-sharp Tom Ford tuxedo, radiating the lethal, protective energy of a king defending his queen.

The grand ballroom was a masterpiece of obscene wealth and curated arrogance. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over original Picassos and Monets up for auction. The elite of the global underworld mingled, sipping champagne, oblivious to the guillotine poised above their heads.

I spotted her instantly. Elena Rostova stood near the podium, wearing a stunning silver gown. She was breathtakingly beautiful, with sharp, aristocratic features and eyes like shattered ice.

When she saw me, her confident, mocking smile froze completely.

The ambient chatter in the ballroom died down. The sea of billionaires parted as I walked straight toward her.

"Megan Vance," Elena purred, recovering her composure quickly, though her bodyguards tensed. "I must admit, I expected you to be sitting in a federal holding cell right now, weeping over your frozen bank accounts. How did you get past the door?"

"I don't sneak in, Elena. I conquer," I said smoothly, stopping three feet away from her. My voice projected clearly over the silent, echoing room. "And I don't weep."

"Arrest her. She is trespassing," Elena commanded her mercenaries.

Jonathan stepped forward smoothly, his towering frame instantly intimidating the guards. "I wouldn't do that. The perimeter of this hotel is currently surrounded by forty heavily armed FBI tactical agents."

Elena scoffed, though a microscopic bead of sweat formed on her brow. "The FBI has no jurisdiction here, and they have no proof of anything."

I reached into my gold clutch and pulled out a sleek, encrypted tablet. I tapped the screen once, illuminating the unredacted master ledger from David’s hard drive, and held it up for her to see.

Elena looked at the screen. The color completely and utterly drained from her face. The untouchable Russian syndicate boss shattered in a microsecond.

"You see, Elena," I smiled, my eyes hardening into chips of diamond. "While you were busy forging documents to frame a mother, I found your original source code. I didn't just clear my name. I forwarded the exact routing numbers of your global laundering operation to the Treasury Department, Interpol, and the SEC."

"You’re bluffing," Elena hissed, her hands trembling violently.

"At 9:00 P.M. tonight," I announced, delivering the fatal blow, "the federal government enacted an emergency freeze on your entire portfolio. Your offshore accounts are seized. The paintings in this room are officially federal evidence. You are completely, utterly bankrupt."
