Chapter 4 - The White Grave and the Filthy ConfessionThe heavy leather suitcase slipped from David’s grip and crashed onto the floor.

He stood completely paralyzed, his tanned face instantly draining to a sickly, chalky white. His pupils dilated in sheer, unadulterated shock. He stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish, unable to form a single syllable. It took a full ten seconds for his brain to process the catastrophic weight of my words.

"What... what kind of sick joke is this?" his voice violently trembled, cracking in the middle. "Megan, stop. That's not funny. You're crossing a line."

I opened the manila envelope, pulled out a heavy, state-issued document bordered in black, and slammed it directly into his chest. It fluttered to the floor, landing at his expensive Italian leather shoes.

"That is a certified death certificate," I said, my eyes burning into him. "Lily went into acute multi-organ failure from a rare, aggressive viral infection. The doctors spent six agonizing hours fighting to save her. She cried out for 'Daddy' over and over again while the pain tore her tiny body apart. I called you fifty times so you could say goodbye to your only child. But you were busy 'detoxing'. You were busy drinking champagne on a yacht with Julianne."

David fell to his knees as if his legs had been physically severed. He scrambled on the hardwood floor with shaking hands, grabbing the death certificate. His eyes darted frantically across the italicized text.

Name: Lily Vance.

Time of Death: 2:17 AM.

Cause of Death: Acute Respiratory and Multi-Organ Failure.

"No... No... God, no!" David screamed. It was a visceral, guttural howl of a man whose reality had just been violently shattered. He clutched the paper to his chest, tears instantly flooding his face. His entire body convulsed with violent sobs. "My baby... my little girl... Why didn't you tell me?! Why didn't you text me what was happening?!"

"I did text you," I replied, my voice as sharp as a razor blade. "And you replied with a direct order: 'Do not contact me for the next two weeks.' As a respectful, accommodating wife, I honored your boundaries."

He bowed his head to the floor, weeping hysterically, completely broken. "I'm sorry... Oh God, I'm so sorry... I didn't know... I thought you were just being crazy... Lily... my sweet Lily..."

If I had been the woman I was fourteen days ago, I might have collapsed beside him. I might have believed that his agony was pure and absolute. But the woman I had become only looked down at him with profound, sickening disgust.

I reached into the envelope again, pulled out a thick stack of financial documents, and threw them down onto the floor, right beside the death certificate.

"Stop acting, David. Get up," I commanded.

He lifted his red, tear-streaked face, looking at me in absolute confusion. His eyes slowly drifted to the papers scattered on the floor. He saw the Cayman Island bank statements. He saw the articles of incorporation for the shell companies in Lily's name.

And then, he saw the five-million-dollar life insurance policy.

The moment his eyes locked onto that specific document, the most horrifying psychological shift I have ever witnessed took place. The devastating, soul-crushing grief of a mourning father vanished in a millisecond. It was instantly replaced by the raw, animalistic terror of a cornered criminal. His tears literally stopped falling. The shaking of his shoulders transitioned from sorrow to pure, unadulterated panic.

"Where... where did you get these?" he stammered, scrambling backward on his hands and knees, trying to get away from the documents as if they were radioactive.

"You don't get to cry for her," I snarled, stepping forward and towering over him. "You used a seven-year-old child's identity to launder millions in stolen corporate funds. You turned your own daughter into a tax shelter. And worst of all, you purchased a five-million-dollar life insurance policy the very week she started showing symptoms of illness. You knew, didn't you? You figured if she died, you'd get a massive payout to fund your new life with your twenty-five-year-old whore!"

"No! Megan, listen to me!" David frantically scrambled to his feet, holding his hands up in a desperate, pathetic gesture of surrender. The arrogant CEO was completely gone, replaced by a sniveling coward. "It was just... it was just a financial precaution! I did it for our family's future! The trust funds were going to be hers when she turned eighteen!"

"She is never going to turn eighteen!" I screamed, the sound tearing through the quiet house. "She was buried in the freezing mud while you were sleeping with another woman!"

"I'll split it with you!" David begged, desperately grabbing at the only lifeline his sociopathic brain could comprehend. "The five million... the offshore accounts. We can split it fifty-fifty! You can start over, Megan! You don't have to go to the police. Please, I'll lose everything!"

I stared at him, the nausea rising in my throat. A father, having just learned of his daughter's agonizing death ten minutes ago, was now attempting to bribe his wife with the child's life insurance money to save his own skin.

"You have already lost everything, David," I whispered.

At that exact moment, the deafening shriek of multiple police sirens pierced the air outside. The flashing red and blue lights swept violently across the living room windows, illuminating David’s pale, horrified face.
