Chapter 9 - The Trojan HorseThe drive back to the estate was tense. Jonathan was furiously texting on his encrypted phone, coordinating with a high-level contact he had within the FBI’s Organized Crime division.

"We don't just hand the drive to Marcus," I said, staring out the window at the passing city. "If we give him the money, he takes it and kills us anyway to cover his tracks. Men like him don't leave witnesses."
"Agreed," Jonathan said, glancing at me from the driver's seat. "My contact at the Bureau, Agent Harrison, is bringing a cyber-team to the hotel. If Julianne is telling the truth and the drive is in the music box, we can use it to trace the Vanguard syndicate's entire global network. But we need Marcus to log in. We need him to expose his IP address and confirm his identity on a recorded line."
We arrived at my house. The private security detail Jonathan had hired was already stationed at the perimeter.
I walked straight upstairs to Lily’s room. It was exactly as I had left it, halfway packed in cardboard boxes. I went to her dresser and picked up the heavy, ornate Swiss music box. I turned it over, pressing my thumbs against the velvet lining on the bottom. With a soft click, the wood slid back.
Nestled inside the hidden compartment was a sleek, black titanium USB drive.
I felt a sickening wave of disgust, but I pushed it down. I walked back downstairs and handed the drive to Jonathan.
"Let's go to war," I whispered.
For the next ten hours, we were barricaded in a secure suite at the Four Seasons, surrounded by federal agents and cyber-security experts. Agent Harrison, a sharp, no-nonsense veteran, plugged the drive into an isolated, air-gapped terminal.
"Julianne was smart," Harrison muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "This is a dual-authentication crypto-wallet. It requires the physical drive, and it requires a localized IP ping to authorize the transfer. Marcus has to be in the room to accept the funds."
"Then we invite him to the room," I said calmly.
Harrison looked at me, surprised by my composure. "Mrs. Vance, if we set up a sting, you will be the bait. You will have to sit across from a man who butchers people for a living."
"He threatened to burn my house down," I replied, crossing my arms. "I am not afraid of him. Tell me what to do."
By 8:00 PM, the trap was set. We rented a private, soundproof meeting room in the hotel's business center. The FBI had wired the room with microscopic cameras and audio transmitters. Tactical teams were staged in the adjoining suites, waiting for the signal.
I sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, wearing a stark white, tailored blazer. I didn't look like a grieving widow. I looked like a CEO. The titanium USB drive rested in the center of the table.
At exactly 9:00 PM, the heavy doors opened.
Marcus walked in, flanked by his two massive enforcers. He scanned the room, his icy eyes lingering on the empty corners before settling on me. He smirked, walking to the table and sitting directly across from me.
"Punctual. I appreciate that in a business partner," Marcus purred, his eyes locking onto the USB drive. "I assume you found the key."
"I found it," I said, keeping my voice perfectly level. "But before I hand over ten million dollars, I want absolute assurance that my life, and my property, are no longer a target for Vanguard Holdings."
"You have my word, Megan," Marcus smiled, a hollow, predatory expression. "Once the funds clear into my offshore routing accounts, you and I will never see each other again."
"Prove it," I challenged, pushing a laptop across the table toward him. The laptop was rigged by the FBI to mirror the transaction directly to their secure servers. "Log into your Vanguard receiving account. Show me that the transfer is complete, and we are done."
Marcus chuckled, amused by my perceived paranoia. "Very well. If it helps you sleep at night."

He pulled the laptop closer, inserted the USB drive, and began typing his highly encrypted, multi-layered passwords to open the Vanguard receiving portal.
He didn't know he was typing his own confession.
