Chapter 5 - The Sirens and the Fall of a MonsterDavid backed away toward the staircase, his eyes darting frantically toward the front windows. The heavy thud of combat boots echoed on the front porch, followed immediately by a thunderous pounding on the front door.

"FBI! Open the door!" a voice roared from outside.
David looked at me, his eyes wide with a terror so profound it almost looked like madness. "What did you do? Megan, what did you do?!"
"I gave them everything," I replied, crossing my arms. "The offshore accounts. The forged signatures. The embezzlement records from your firm. The life insurance fraud. Everything."
Before David could even think of running toward the back door, the front entrance was violently breached. The heavy mahogany door flew open, and a dozen heavily armed federal agents, accompanied by IRS criminal investigators, swarmed into the foyer.
"David Vance! Keep your hands where we can see them! Get on the ground! Now!" the lead agent shouted, unholstering his weapon.
David’s knees buckled. He collapsed onto the hardwood floor, sobbing uncontrollably, not for the daughter he had lost, but for the life of luxury that had just been vaporized. Two agents aggressively pinned him to the floor, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping cold, heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
As they hauled him to his feet, Jonathan Hayes, my attorney, walked calmly through the open doorway. He adjusted his suit jacket, looking at David with supreme professional disgust.
"Mr. Vance," Jonathan said smoothly. "In addition to the federal indictments for wire fraud, money laundering, and embezzlement, you are hereby served with emergency asset forfeiture documents. Every cent you have ever touched is now under federal control."
David struggled against the agents holding him, his face twisted in desperate rage. "Julianne! Call Julianne! Tell her to transfer the Cayman accounts!" he screamed, his mind completely broken by panic.
Jonathan offered a cold, humorless smile. "I'm afraid Ms. Julianne is currently unavailable. She was intercepted by federal agents at the airport baggage claim an hour ago. Given that her signature was on the board of your shell companies, she is facing the exact same federal conspiracy charges that you are. She was crying quite loudly when they put her in the back of the cruiser."
David stopped struggling. The final pillar of his arrogant, deceitful life crumbled to dust. He was going to federal prison for decades. His mistress was going to prison. His reputation, his wealth, and his future were entirely annihilated.
The agents began marching him toward the door. As he passed me, he stopped pulling away. He looked at me, his eyes hollow, completely defeated.
"Megan... please," he whimpered, a pathetic, broken shell of a man.
I stepped closer to him. I didn't feel anger anymore. I didn't feel triumph. I only felt the cold, hard justice of a mother who had protected her child's legacy.
"Enjoy your detox, David," I whispered. "I hear federal prison is incredibly quiet."

I watched as they shoved him into the back of a black SUV. The convoy of federal vehicles pulled away, their sirens fading into the distance, leaving me standing alone in the quiet foyer.
The house was empty. The monster was gone. I walked over to the front door, closed it firmly against the autumn chill, and locked it. I walked upstairs to Lily's room, sat on the floor beside her neatly packed boxes, and for the first time in fourteen days, I finally allowed myself to cry. Not tears of vengeance, but tears of pure, unadulterated love for the little girl who would finally rest in peace, completely safe from the man who had tried to sell her soul.
