Chapter 10: The Choice

The foundation’s annual charity gala took place in December.

It was held in the same museum ballroom where my life had shattered exactly four years ago. The crystal chandeliers still hung like frozen rain. The marble floors still gleamed under the flashing lights of the press cameras.

But I was not the woman I used to be.

I stood near the grand staircase, wearing a backless, sweeping gown of midnight blue velvet. I did not stand behind a column. I did not search the room for a husband who was busy destroying our vows in a dark corner.

I stood in the center, and the room revolved around me.

"You look like a woman who just conquered a continent," a deep voice murmured behind me.

I turned around. Luca DeSantis stood there, immaculate in a black tuxedo. He held two glasses of champagne, offering one to me.

"Only a minor borough," I smiled, taking the glass.

Luca’s dark eyes locked onto mine. The professional distance we had maintained for the past three years—the careful, unspoken boundary that allowed me to heal and rebuild—was suddenly vibrating with a fierce, undeniable tension.

"Sterling is in federal lockup," Luca said, stepping closer. The ambient noise of the gala seemed to fade into the background. "The foundation is secure. Your ex-husband is keeping his distance. The war is over, Elena."

"Wars are never truly over, Luca," I replied, though my heart was beating a frantic, electric rhythm against my ribs. "There is always another battle."

"Perhaps," Luca conceded, his gaze dropping to my lips for a fraction of a second before meeting my eyes again. "But you don't have to fight them alone anymore."

He didn't touch me. He didn't invade my space. He simply stood there, a towering pillar of strength, offering me a choice. Luca had never demanded my attention. He had never tried to rescue me when I didn't ask for it. He had simply stood by my side, handing me the weapons I needed to save myself.

"I don't need a protector, Luca," I whispered.

"I know," Luca replied softly. "I don't want to protect you. I want to stand beside you while you rule."

I looked at the man in front of me. I thought about the long nights in my office, the silent support, the unyielding respect he had shown me. I had stopped mourning my old life years ago. I was finally ready to begin the new one.

I reached out, my fingers gently tracing the lapel of his tuxedo jacket. Luca’s breath hitched, the formidable venture capitalist completely at the mercy of my touch.

"Then stand beside me," I commanded softly.

Luca’s smile was devastating. He stepped into my space, slipping his arm around the bare skin of my lower back. The heat of his touch was a grounding, electric shock.

The string quartet began to play a slow, sweeping waltz.

"Dance with me," Luca said.

I let him lead me onto the center of the marble floor. The guests parted for us. The cameras flashed. But I didn't care about the audience.

As we moved beneath the chandeliers, my head held high, I looked around the room where I had once been humiliated. It no longer held any power over me. The ghosts were dead.

I was Elena Moretti. I was a mother, a strategist, and the undisputed architect of my own destiny. I had taken the shattered pieces of a betrayal and forged them into an empire.

And as Luca spun me into the light, I finally understood the greatest truth of all.

Peace is not something you find in silence. Peace is what you build when you finally decide to speak.
