Chapter 7: The Trojan Horse

The media caught wind of the subpoena within forty-eight hours.

Evelyn’s public relations team was ruthless and highly paid. Gossip columns that had once praised my strength began running speculative headlines. Is the Moretti Heiress Hiding Millions? The Whistleblower Foundation Under Fire. They were trying to poison the well, aiming to scare away my legitimate donors.

On Thursday evening, the rain was lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse. I was pouring a glass of Barolo when the private elevator chimed.

My security guard, Marcus, stepped out. "Ms. Moretti. You have a visitor in the lobby. He bypasses standard protocol, but given the circumstances, I thought you should decide."

"Who is it?"

"Ryan Caldwell."

My hand paused on the stem of the wine glass. I had not seen my ex-husband in person for nearly three years. Our communication regarding Lucia was strictly handled through legal mediators and supervised visitation centers.

"Send him up," I commanded.

Five minutes later, Ryan stepped into my living room. The man who had once commanded boardrooms with arrogant ease looked entirely different. He was thinner, his hair graying at the temples. The expensive arrogance had been replaced by a heavy, profound exhaustion.

He did not walk toward me. He stayed near the elevator, maintaining the legal boundary set by our divorce agreement.

"I only have five minutes," Ryan said, his voice strained. "Julian Sterling’s lawyers contacted me this morning."

I took a slow sip of my wine. "And what does the billionaire want with a disgraced former executive?"

Ryan swallowed hard. "Evelyn is pulling the strings. She wants to destroy your public credibility, but she knows the financial audit won't find anything. So, she is creating a second front. Sterling’s lawyers offered to fully fund a petition for me to demand full, unmonitored custody of Lucia. They want to claim that your foundation’s 'criminal investigation' makes you an unfit mother."

The glass in my hand felt suddenly fragile. The fury that spiked in my blood was blinding, primal, and entirely lethal. Threatening my foundation was business. Threatening my daughter was a death sentence.

"And what did you tell them, Ryan?" I asked, my voice a deadly whisper.

Ryan looked directly into my eyes. For the first time in his life, he did not look away.

"I told them to go to hell," Ryan stated flatly. "I told them that I lost my daughter because of my own arrogance, and I will not be used as a pawn to traumatize her now. But Elena... they are going to find a way to drag you into family court. Evelyn is obsessed. She wants to see you break."

I studied the man standing in front of me. The man who had broken my heart, but who was finally, desperately, trying to be a father.

"Why are you warning me?" I asked.

"Because I wrote to you that loving someone means protecting their peace," Ryan said quietly, turning back toward the elevator. "I cannot fix the past. But I will not let Evelyn touch our daughter. I am giving my lawyers authorization to file a sworn affidavit stating that Sterling attempted to bribe me to file a fraudulent custody claim. Use it to bury them."

The elevator doors opened. Ryan stepped inside.

"Ryan," I called out before the doors closed.

He looked up.

"Thank you."

It was not forgiveness. But it was respect.

As the doors slid shut, my phone vibrated on the marble counter. It was Luca.

"I have the financial data," Luca said, his voice crackling with anticipation. "Sterling Equities is over-leveraged. They are funding Evelyn’s vendetta using capital from their European investors, but they are doing it through an illegal shell maneuver."

I smiled, looking out at the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline.

"Good," I said. "It is time to invite Evelyn to lunch."
