Chapter 13: The Smear Campaign

Old money does not die quietly. When financial ruin fails, they turn to the one weapon they have spent generations perfecting: character assassination.

Three days after I threw Eleanor Sterling out of my boardroom, the city woke up to a media firestorm. The front page of the New York Chronicle—a publication heavily funded by the remnants of the Sterling empire—ran a headline that made my blood run cold.

DeSantis & Moretti: A Philanthropic Empire Built on Mob Money and Insider Trading?

The article was a masterpiece of fabricated journalism. It didn't attack me directly; it attacked Luca. It dragged up deeply buried, decades-old rumors about Luca’s estranged uncle, a man with ties to the Italian syndicate. The piece falsely implied that Luca’s venture capital firm was a massive money-laundering operation, and that my foundation was simply a front to clean the dirty money.

By noon, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced a "preliminary inquiry" into DeSantis Capital. Our major corporate donors began calling, panicked, threatening to pull their funding.

I walked across the street to Luca’s towering corporate headquarters. The trading floors were chaotic, but when I reached his executive suite on the top floor, it was dead silent.

Luca was standing by the window, staring out at the city. His suit jacket was discarded on a chair, and he looked more exhausted than I had ever seen him.

“They are trying to drag you into the mud to destroy me,” I said, closing the heavy oak door behind me.

Luca turned around. The guilt in his dark eyes shattered my heart. “Elena, the man they mentioned in the article… he was my uncle. I cut ties with that side of my family when I was eighteen. I built this firm legitimately to escape that shadow. But Eleanor bought the press. She is using my bloodline to taint your foundation. I should step down from your board. If I distance myself, the heat will die down.”

I walked across the room, stopping inches from him. I reached up, framing his strong, tense jaw with my hands, forcing him to look directly at me.

“Do you remember what you did when the world was tearing me apart over Ryan’s affair?” I asked fiercely. “You didn't step back. You didn't hide. You stood right beside me.”

“This is different,” Luca whispered, his hands coming up to rest on my waist. “This could ruin the sanctuary you built.”

“No,” I said, my voice absolute and unyielding. “I do not abandon the people who fight for me. If Eleanor wants to use the press to wage a war of reputations, then we will finish it on a public stage. We don't play defense, Luca. We annihilate.”

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed my Director of Public Relations.

“Book the grand ballroom at The Plaza Hotel for eight o'clock tonight,” I ordered. “Call every major news network in the city. Tell them Elena Moretti and Luca DeSantis are holding a joint, live press conference. And send a VIP invitation to Eleanor Sterling. Put her in the front row.”

Luca stared at me, awe replacing the guilt in his eyes. “What are you going to do?”

“I am going to show them what happens when you try to burn a woman who already knows how to walk through fire.”
