Chapter 6: The Echo of the Fall

Two years is a dangerous amount of time in New York City. It is just long enough for the ashes of a scandal to settle, and just short enough for the vultures to believe it is safe to return to the feast.

Lucia was three years old. She had inherited my father’s dark, observant eyes and my absolute refusal to be ignored. On a brisk Tuesday morning in October, she was sitting on the Persian rug in my corner office at the foundation, aggressively coloring a picture of a dragon. I was at my mahogany desk, reviewing the quarterly grants for our whistleblower protection fund.

Life was orchestrated, peaceful, and mine.

Then, the heavy glass door to my office swung open.

Luca DeSantis walked in. He did not knock. Over the past three years, Luca had evolved from a silent ally into an indispensable fixture in my life. His venture capital firm occupied the top three floors of the building across the street, but he spent an inordinate amount of time in my office. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his jaw tight, his dark eyes radiating a suppressed, lethal energy.

"We have a problem," Luca said, his voice a low rumble. He glanced at Lucia, instantly softening his expression, but the tension in his shoulders remained rigid.

"I prefer the term 'unplanned variables,'" I replied calmly, setting down my gold pen. "What is it?"

Luca placed a thick, sealed manila envelope on the center of my desk. It bore the seal of the New York State Supreme Court.

"This was just served to the foundation’s legal department downstairs," Luca said. "It is a massive, aggressive subpoena. Someone is demanding three years of our internal financial communications, citing fraudulent allocation of charitable funds."

I stared at the envelope. My foundation was spotless. My father, with his decades of navigating the razor-thin line between power and corruption, had ensured that my legal framework was a titanium fortress.

"Who is the plaintiff?" I asked, my voice dropping to a freezing temperature.

"A shell corporation called Vanguard Holdings," Luca replied. "But my analysts cracked the corporate veil twenty minutes ago. Vanguard is a subsidiary of Sterling Equities."

The name hit the room like a drop of poison in a glass of water.

Julian Sterling was a billionaire real estate developer. He was old money, arrogant, and possessed a legendary hatred for the Moretti family because my father had once publicly blocked him from seizing a waterfront district. But Sterling had never attacked me directly.

"Why now?" I asked, standing up and walking over to the window that overlooked Manhattan.

"Because Julian Sterling got married six months ago," Luca said quietly. "To a woman looking for revenge."

I turned around. "Who?"

"Evelyn Cross."

The name tasted like ash. Evelyn Cross. The woman who had worn my husband’s suit jacket in a VIP lounge. The mistress who had laughed while Ryan Caldwell destroyed his career, believing she was untouchable. When I exposed Ryan, Evelyn had become a social pariah. She had disappeared into Europe, only to apparently return with a billionaire husband and an axe to grind.

"She is using Sterling’s money to bleed the foundation dry with legal fees," Luca explained, stepping closer to my desk. "She wants to drag your name through the press. She wants to paint you as a corrupt fraud to avenge her own humiliation."

I looked down at Lucia, who was holding up her drawing of a purple dragon, completely oblivious to the war that had just entered the room.

"Mommy, look," Lucia smiled.

"It’s beautiful, my love," I said softly, crouching down to kiss her forehead.

I stood back up, smoothing the skirt of my pencil dress. The panic Evelyn hoped to incite did not exist. I had survived the collapse of my marriage. I had survived the media circus. I was a Moretti.

"Luca," I said, my voice echoing with the terrifying, absolute calm of my father. "Tell our legal team to accept the subpoena. Let them look at the books. And then, I want you to buy a controlling interest in the debt of Sterling Equities. If Evelyn wants to play corporate warfare, I am going to teach her the difference between marrying power and being born into it."
