Chapter 16 - The Phantom Office

The most fatal mistake a sovereign can make is believing that a defeated empire leaves no creditors behind. For an entire year, our Japanese-style estate was an impenetrable fortress of absolute tranquility. The air smelled of crushed pine and blooming jasmine. My forensic accounting firm, fueled by the global spotlight of the Vanguard Syndicate’s destruction, had grown into an international titan. We provided asylum, digital protection, and financial restitution to women escaping the darkest corners of corporate and marital abuse. Vivienne Thorne was rotting in a federal supermax. Grant was a ghost. I had earned my peace.
But in the stratosphere of global wealth, corruption never truly dies. It simply waits for a new master to claim it.
It started on a breathless Thursday afternoon. I was sitting at our indestructible 304 stainless steel kitchen island, watching Julian sketch a new architectural blueprint for a pediatric wing we were funding. The sunlight reflected perfectly off the tempered glass cabinets.
Suddenly, the encrypted tablet in my hands emitted a sharp, dissonant chime. It wasn't a standard email notification. It was a Tier-One compliance alert from the International Department of Labor.
Julian looked up, the warmth instantly vanishing from his eyes as he saw the blood drain from my face.
“Evelyn,” Julian breathed, setting his pencil down. “What is it?”
I tapped the screen, my heart turning to ice. “Someone just registered a proxy representative office under my firm’s name in a shadow jurisdiction in Southeast Asia. They bypassed our legal firewalls and submitted a complete set of forged internal labor rules to the local authorities. The documentation bears my exact digital signature.”
A cold, visceral spike of adrenaline pierced my chest. I didn't panic. Panic was a luxury I had buried years ago. A ghost office wasn't just a bureaucratic error; in the corporate underworld, it was a legal shield used to launder massive amounts of blood money under a legitimate brand’s immaculate reputation.
Before I could initiate a trace, my private, heavily encrypted smartphone vibrated. The caller ID displayed a restricted proxy originating from Singapore.
I answered it, placing it on speaker.
“It is a pleasure to finally hear the voice of the woman who dismantled my most lucrative clients,” a man purred. His voice was polished, aristocratic, and dripping with centuries of untouchable, glacial wealth.

“Who is this?” I demanded, my voice dropping to a lethal, uncompromising register.
“My name is Arthur Kensington,” the voice replied smoothly. “I am the senior managing director of the Kensington-Vanguard Depository. Vivienne Thorne was a brute, Evelyn. But she was a wealthy brute, and she kept her most critical emergency escrows in my vault. When you executed your little digital heist, you inadvertently seized four billion dollars that legally belonged to my institution’s shadow ledgers. I just opened a representative office in your name. If you don't wire the money back to me in twenty-four hours, that office will publicly execute a series of massive, illegal weapons transactions. You will be indicted for international terrorism by Friday.”
