Chapter 5 - A New Empire

Two years later, the dust had completely settled, and the landscape of my life was unrecognizable from the prison I had once lived in.
The divorce proceedings were a bloodbath for Grant. With the undeniable proof of his infidelity, financial fraud, and recorded threats, the judge granted me full primary custody of Owen, Lily, and little Leo. Grant was ordered to pay massive restitution, both to me and to the IRS. He avoided federal prison by pleading guilty and turning over all remaining assets, but his reputation in the business world was permanently destroyed. He was last seen working as a mid-level manager at a logistics warehouse in another state, living in a cramped one-bedroom apartment.
Tessa had tried to reach out to him once he was ruined, likely looking for a payout, but vanished again when she realized there was nothing left to take.
As for me, I didn't just survive; I thrived. Using the wealth I had rightfully secured, I didn't just return to the workforce—I started my own forensic accounting firm specializing in helping women uncover hidden marital assets during high-conflict divorces. I became the shield for women who were told they were “too emotional” or “bad with numbers.” My firm became one of the most sought-after in the state.
Our new home was filled with light, laughter, and absolute peace. Owen was thriving in a new school, Lily was taking ballet lessons, and Leo was a happy, energetic toddler running through our massive backyard.
One warm summer evening, I hosted a barbecue for my friends, my family, and the colleagues who had helped me build my new life. I stood on the patio, holding a glass of wine, watching my children chase fireflies in the grass. A handsome, kind-eyed architect named Julian, whom I had been dating for six months, came up behind me and wrapped a warm arm around my waist.
“You look like you're a million miles away,” Julian smiled, pressing a kiss to my temple.

“No,” I replied, leaning into his solid, comforting presence. “For the first time in my life, I am exactly where I am supposed to be.”
Grant had once told me I would have nothing without him. He was right about one thing: I had nothing holding me back, nothing keeping me small, and nothing standing in the way of the beautiful, powerful empire I had built with my own two hands.
