Chapter 2 - The Morning AfterAt 8:00 AM the following morning, I sat at my new marble kitchen island, sipping decaf coffee and watching the sunlight stream through the windows. The townhouse was peaceful. There was no walking on eggshells, no waiting for Grant’s booming voice to dictate the mood of the day.

At 8:15 AM, the fireworks began.
I had left my old phone—the one Grant paid for and tracked—sitting on the kitchen counter of our old house. But I had my laptop open, securely logged into our joint banking portal. I watched in real-time as the numbers changed. Grant was at the bank as soon as the doors opened, just as I predicted. He was trying to freeze the accounts, to cut off the money he assumed I would try to use.
What he found instead was that the joint accounts were already at zero.
A month prior, Diane had filed a sealed, ex parte motion with a sympathetic judge, presenting irrefutable evidence of Grant’s financial fraud and his documented plans to hide marital assets. The judge quietly granted an order freezing Grant's secret offshore accounts and allowing me to legally transfer exactly 50% of all domestic marital assets into an escrow account he couldn't touch.
My burner phone rang. It was Grant’s mother, Eleanor. I let it go to voicemail, then played it on speaker.
“Emily, I don't know what kind of pregnant, hysterical episode you are having, but Grant is beside himself!” Eleanor’s shrill voice filled the room. “He says you’ve stolen his money! You need to bring those children back this instant before he calls the police for kidnapping!”
I smiled, tapping a key on my laptop to forward the voicemail directly to Diane. Let him call the police. I had temporary, court-ordered emergency custody tucked safely in my folder, signed by a judge yesterday afternoon based on the audio recordings of his threats and his history of emotional abuse.
An hour later, Diane called me. “Well, he tried it.”
“Tried what?” I asked.
“He called the police, claiming you abducted the children and stole his car. The precinct captain had our paperwork on file. They told your husband that it’s a civil matter and that he is not to attempt to locate you. I also just served his corporate lawyer with the divorce filings, the restraining order, and the forensic audit of his company.”
“How did he react?”
“According to his lawyer, Grant nearly threw up in the conference room,” Diane chuckled. “Oh, and Emily? That company SUV you left in his driveway last night? I had it legally repossessed this morning. He bought it under the company name, but used fraudulent collateral. The bank was very eager to take it back.”

I imagined Tessa, waking up in my old guest room in her glittering green dress, expecting to be treated like the new queen of the castle, only to find her king hyperventilating over a repossessed car and frozen bank accounts. The illusion of the powerful, wealthy man she thought she had stolen was rapidly evaporating.
My baby kicked hard against my ribs, a sudden, strong movement that made me gasp and then laugh. “We’re doing great, little one,” I whispered. “We’re doing just great.”
