Chapter 3 - The Boardroom AmbushTwo weeks passed. Two weeks of absolute silence on my end, while Grant’s world spectacularly unraveled.

Because of the evidence of embezzlement I had uncovered, the board of directors at Grant’s tech firm called an emergency meeting. Grant had always boasted that he was the irreplaceable visionary of the company, the man holding it all together. In reality, he was bleeding it dry to fund his secret accounts and his lavish affair with Tessa.
Diane and I were legally invited to attend the meeting via Zoom, as I was technically a 15% shareholder—a detail Grant had overlooked years ago when we first incorporated the business.
I sat in Diane’s plush office, wearing a sharp, tailored maternity blazer. When the Zoom camera flickered on, Grant’s face appeared on the large screen. He looked terrible. He had aged five years in fourteen days. The arrogant smirk was gone, replaced by deep, dark circles under his eyes and a frantic, nervous energy. Tessa was nowhere to be seen.
“Emily,” Grant snapped the moment he saw me on screen, abandoning all professional decorum. “You crazy bitch. You’re destroying my life. Tell them! Tell them you forged those documents because you’re hormonal and jealous!”
“Mr. Sterling, you will control yourself, or I will mute you,” the Chairman of the Board, a stern man named Richard, interrupted. “Emily, thank you for joining us. We have reviewed the forensic accounting files provided by your legal counsel.”
“They’re fake!” Grant shouted, slamming his hand on the table. “She’s trying to ruin me because I moved my girlfriend in!”
A heavy, painful silence fell over the boardroom. Several board members exchanged wide-eyed, disgusted looks. Grant, in his panic, had just admitted to his scandalous behavior on the record.
“Grant,” Richard said, his voice cold as ice. “The SEC has officially opened an investigation based on the discrepancies in the offshore routing numbers. You’ve exposed this company to federal liability. The board has voted unanimously. You are terminated as CEO, effective immediately. We are also pursuing legal action against you to recoup the embezzled funds.”
Grant’s mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land. “You... you can’t do this. I built this company! I have bills! I have a house!”
“The bank is foreclosing on the house, Grant,” I said, speaking for the first time. My voice was calm, steady, and loud enough to command the room. “You missed three mortgage payments because you were funneling that money to Tessa’s luxury apartment lease. The one she signed last month.”
Grant stared at the camera, his eyes wild with disbelief. “How did you know about that?”
“Because while you were busy trying to convince the world I was crazy,” I said, looking directly into the lens, “I was busy proving you were a criminal. This meeting is over for me. Speak to my lawyer.”

Diane ended the call. We sat in the quiet office for a moment before Diane poured herself a glass of sparkling water and raised it toward me. “Checkmate.”
That evening, I received an unhinged, frantic email from Tessa. She demanded to know where the money was and complained that Grant was having a "mental breakdown" on her couch. She told me to "take him back." I didn't reply. I just sent the email to Diane to add to our harassment file. The glittering green dress had quickly lost its sparkle.
