Chapter 3 - The Perfect Apology

At 6:00 a.m., I took the elevator back up to the presidential suite.

Axton was awake, pacing the floor, running a hand through his hair.

When he saw me, he stopped.

“Callie, where have you been? I was worried sick.”

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t throw my purse at him.

I forced tears into my eyes and let my shoulders slump.

“I’m so sorry,” I whispered, sounding exactly like the fragile, overthinking woman he had trained me to be.

Axton let out a breath of relief.

He crossed the room and pulled me into his arms, kissing the top of my head.

“I was just so stressed from the wedding,” I lied, burying my face in his chest so he couldn’t see my eyes. “I panicked. I’m sorry I walked out.”

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Axton murmured, his voice dripping with condescension. “I told you, you overthink things. Everything is perfect.”

He smiled, completely convinced he had won.

He didn’t know I had pressed record on my phone before walking through the door.

He didn't know I was sending the audio of his gaslighting directly to my attorney.

And he certainly didn't know what I had planned for breakfast.
