Chapter 4 - The Post-Wedding Brunch

At 11:00 a.m., our families gathered in the hotel’s rooftop garden for the farewell brunch.

The sun was shining.

The champagne was flowing.

My mother was beaming with pride, chatting with Axton’s wealthy parents.

Mila sat across from me, looking exhausted but wearing a bright, innocent smile.

Axton stood up and clinked his glass with a silver spoon.

The rooftop went quiet.

“I just want to thank everyone for being here,” Axton said, looking at me with absolute adoration. “Yesterday was the best day of my life. I married a woman who is not only beautiful, but fiercely loyal. To family. To us.”

Everyone clapped.

Mila raised her glass, her eyes catching Axton’s for one brief, secret second.

I stood up.

“I have something to say, too,” I announced.

Axton smiled, gesturing for me to take the floor.

“Weddings are about family,” I said into the microphone. “And I couldn’t have done this without my maid of honor. My sister, Mila.”

Mila looked down, feigning modesty.

“In fact, I have a special gift for her. And for my new husband.”

I reached under the table and pulled out two large manila envelopes.
