Friday at 6:45 p.m.
Evelyn stood in her shop wearing a black silk dress.
She looked at her phone.
No message from Andrew.
At 6:50 p.m., the screen finally lit up.
A text message.
"Evelyn, I'm so sorry. An emergency project came up. I have to leave the state for a few months. I can't make it tonight."
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Leave the state?
For a coffee shop architect?
She didn't need to be a detective to know what had happened.
Someone had made Andrew an offer he couldn't refuse.
Or a threat he couldn't ignore.
