Chapter 2 - The Ghost Protocol

When Dominic returned to the sprawling, sixty-million-dollar triplex penthouse in Tribeca, the silence of the massive apartment hit him like a physical blow.
He had expected the chaotic noise of a newborn. He had expected the scent of baby powder, the nervous energy of the night nurses he had hired, and Claire sitting in the nursery he had commissioned a famous designer to build.
Instead, the penthouse was as silent as a tomb.
“Claire?” Dominic called out, his voice echoing off the marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson River.
No answer.
He walked down the long hallway to the master suite. The massive walk-in closet, which had once been filled with Claire’s designer gowns, shoes, and handbags, was half-empty. It wasn't completely cleared out—she hadn't taken the Birkins, the diamonds, or the couture he had bought her to play the role of the perfect mafia wife. She had only taken the things that actually mattered: her comfortable clothes, her passports, her family heirlooms, and everything that belonged to Noah.
A cold spike of adrenaline pierced Dominic’s chest. He pulled out his phone, dialing his head of security, Gabriel.
“Where is she?” Dominic barked into the receiver.
“Boss, I’m sorry,” Gabriel’s voice was tight with panic. “The Mercer security firm bypassed our detail at the hospital. They used a decoy convoy. We have men sweeping the city, tracking her credit cards, her phone—”
“Her phone is sitting on the kitchen counter!” Dominic yelled, having just spotted the device resting next to her discarded wedding ring. “Check her bank accounts. See where she booked a flight.”
“We did. The joint accounts are completely untouched. But Boss... there’s something else.”
“What?”
“The servers in the home office. The encrypted drives.” Gabriel swallowed hard. “Someone accessed the master ledger three days ago. The firewall was bypassed using your personal administrative codes. They downloaded everything. The shell companies, the offshore routing numbers, the union payoff lists. The entire financial architecture of the Hale Maritime empire.”
Dominic stopped breathing. The phone nearly slipped from his hand.
The master ledger. It was the only digital map that connected his legitimate, multi-billion-dollar shipping and real estate companies to the violent, illegal gambling and protection rackets that funded them. If the FBI ever got their hands on that ledger, Dominic wouldn't just lose his wealth. He would spend the rest of his life in a federal supermax prison, and the rival families would slaughter his remaining loyalists.
Only one person besides Dominic knew where that ledger was hidden on the server. Only one person had watched him type in the administrative codes enough times to memorize the keystrokes.
Claire.
She hadn't just been sitting at home, weeping over his infidelity for three days. While he was in Sicily, drinking wine and sleeping with Serena Moretti, his quiet, unassuming wife had been systematically downloading the blueprint of his destruction onto an encrypted flash drive.
She didn't just leave him. She took a nuclear warhead with her.
Dominic ran into the home office, his heart hammering against his ribs. He tore open the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk. The heavy, fireproof safe where he kept emergency cash and untraceable passports was wide open. It was completely empty.
Sitting in the center of the empty safe was a single, handwritten note on Claire’s personalized stationery.

“You chose your empire over our son. So I took the empire. Do not look for us, Dominic. If a single one of your men comes within a hundred miles of me, the flash drive automatically uploads to the Department of Justice servers. Enjoy your freedom. It only exists because I allow it.”
Dominic Hale, the most feared man on the Eastern Seaboard, sank to his knees on the hardwood floor, utterly defeated by the woman he thought was too weak to leave.
