Chapter 3 - The House of Cards Crumbles

The collapse of the Hale empire did not happen overnight, but the bleeding started immediately.

Within a week of Claire’s disappearance, the paranoia began to rot Dominic’s organization from the inside out. He couldn't sleep. He couldn't focus. He had all his top hackers trying to trace the digital footprint of the stolen ledger, but Claire had vanished into thin air. She had hired professionals—former intelligence operatives disguised as private security—to scrub her existence.

The first domino fell in Sicily. The Bellandi family, ruthless and impatient, demanded the final transfer of funds to solidify their Mediterranean shipping partnership. But the funds required routing through the exact offshore shell companies that were documented in the stolen ledger.

Dominic couldn't move the money. If he triggered a massive transfer and Claire was watching, or worse, if she had already set up a dead-man’s switch with federal agents, the sudden movement of millions of dollars would trigger an immediate international money-laundering investigation.

He had to stall. And men like the Bellandis did not tolerate stalling.

“The deal is off, Dominic,” Vincenzo Bellandi spat through a secure phone line two weeks later. “You promised liquidity. Now you look weak. The Russians have offered us a better port arrangement. Do not contact this family again.”

The loss of the Sicilian contract cost Dominic’s legitimate company hundreds of millions in projected revenue. The board of directors at Hale Maritime Holdings began to panic. Stock prices plummeted.

And then, Serena Moretti arrived in New York.

She showed up at the Tribeca penthouse, wearing designer sunglasses and a pout, expecting to step seamlessly into the role of the new queen. She thought Claire’s departure meant the throne was hers.

“Dominic, darling,” Serena purred, dropping her bags in the foyer and wrapping her arms around his neck. “I heard the little mouse finally ran away. It’s just us now. We can focus on the business.”

Dominic looked at her. He didn't see the beautiful, seductive woman who had distracted him in Italy. He saw the reason he wasn't holding his son. He saw the catalyst for his entire ruination.

“Get out,” Dominic said, his voice completely dead.

Serena blinked, her smile faltering. “Excuse me? Dominic, I flew halfway across the world—”

“I don't care if you walked on water to get here,” Dominic roared, his voice echoing violently through the empty penthouse. “My wife took the master ledger because I was in your bed! The Sicilians just pulled our contract! The feds are circling like vultures because my board is bleeding out! I am one flash drive away from a life sentence, and you want to play house?!”

Serena’s eyes widened in sheer terror. She realized she hadn't secured a billionaire king; she had tied herself to a sinking ship covered in gasoline.

“You’re losing your mind,” Serena snapped, grabbing her bags. She didn't wait for a second invitation to leave. She practically ran to the elevator, abandoning him the second the smell of money was replaced by the stench of desperation.

Months passed. The mighty Dominic Hale became a shadow of himself. He spent his nights staring at the empty nursery, drinking expensive bourbon until his vision blurred. He imagined the sound of Noah’s laugh. He imagined Claire’s soft voice.

He didn't just miss his control. To his absolute horror, he realized he actually missed his wife. He missed the only person in his life who had ever loved him without an agenda, the only person who had ever offered him a chance at genuine redemption. And he had traded her for absolute nothingness.

He needed to find her. Not for the ledger. For his son.
