Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

It took Dominic a year and a half, millions of dollars, and the combined efforts of three underground surveillance networks to finally locate her.
She wasn't hiding in a third-world country. She wasn't living in a remote cabin. Claire was hiding in plain sight, living in a beautiful, heavily secured estate in an affluent, quiet suburb outside of Charleston, South Carolina.
Dominic didn't bring his muscle. He didn't bring his guns. For the first time in his life, he traveled alone, unarmed, driving a rented sedan up the long, oak-lined driveway of her estate.
When he pulled up to the main house, Julian Mercer’s elite security team was already waiting for him. They didn't draw weapons, but their hands rested casually near their holsters. They escorted him to the expansive back patio overlooking a sprawling, perfectly manicured lawn.
There, sitting at a wrought-iron patio table, drinking iced tea in the warm southern sun, was Claire.
She looked breathtaking. The stress and anxiety that had plagued her in New York were completely gone. She was glowing, wearing a simple white sundress, her hair blowing gently in the breeze.
And playing on a blanket in the grass a few feet away was a toddler. Noah. He was walking, laughing as he chased a golden retriever puppy. Dominic’s breath caught in his throat. His son. He had missed his first steps. He had missed his first words. The physical pain of that realization hit him harder than a bullet.
“Hello, Dominic,” Claire said calmly, not even bothering to stand up.
Dominic slowly walked toward the table, his eyes never leaving the boy. “He’s... he’s beautiful, Claire.”
“He is,” Claire agreed, taking a sip of her tea. “And he is very safe.”
Dominic finally looked at her. He looked completely defeated. The arrogant posture was gone. “I didn't come to threaten you, Claire. I came to beg.”
Claire raised an eyebrow. “The great Dominic Hale, begging?”
“I have nothing left,” Dominic whispered, his voice cracking. “The empire is falling apart. The board forced me out as CEO. The rival families are moving in on the territories. You destroyed me, Claire. Just like you promised.”
“I didn't destroy you, Dominic,” she corrected him smoothly. “I simply handed you the consequences of your own choices. You chose the mafia. You chose the mistress. I just made sure you got exactly what you paid for.”
Dominic fell into the chair across from her, running a shaking hand over his face. “Please. I just want to be a father. I want to know my son. I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll give you half the remaining assets. Just let me see him.”
Claire looked at the man who had broken her heart. She felt absolutely nothing. No anger, no love, no pity. Just a cold, impenetrable wall of maternal protection.
“You are a ghost, Dominic,” Claire said, her voice entirely devoid of mercy. “Noah doesn't have a father who abandons his mother on a delivery table. Noah has a mother who will burn the world down to keep him safe.”
She reached into her purse and pulled out a manila envelope, sliding it across the table.
“Inside this envelope is a legal relinquishment of all parental rights, drawn up by Julian Mercer. It explicitly bars you from ever contacting Noah, me, or anyone in our immediate circle for the rest of your life.”
Dominic stared at the envelope as if it were a bomb. “And if I refuse?”
Claire reached into her purse a second time and placed a small, silver flash drive on top of the envelope.
“If you refuse, I hand this flash drive to the federal prosecutor I’ve had on retainer for the last eighteen months,” Claire stated. “You don't get half the assets, Dominic. You get prison. You get your remaining loyalists indicted under RICO laws. You lose the last shred of your freedom.”
Dominic looked at the flash drive. The key to his absolute destruction. Then he looked at his son, laughing in the grass, completely unaware of the monster sitting twenty feet away.
He picked up the pen resting beside the envelope. His hand shook violently as he signed his name on the dotted line, legally and permanently erasing himself from his son’s life.
Claire took the papers, inspected the signature, and nodded to her security team. “Escort Mr. Hale to his car. His visit is over.”

Dominic stood up, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “I loved you, Claire. In my own messed-up way, I really did love you.”
“I know you did,” Claire replied softly, not looking up from the documents. “But your love wasn't enough to make you a good man. Goodbye, Dominic.”
