Chapter 5 - The Sunlit Kingdom

Five years later, the dark, suffocating memories of the New York penthouse felt like a lifetime away.
Claire sat on the wraparound porch of her Charleston estate, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant hues of orange and pink. The warm evening breeze carried the scent of magnolia blossoms and the distant sound of the ocean.
She had used the untouchable, untraceable cash she had siphoned from Dominic’s emergency safe to seed a massive, completely legitimate philanthropic foundation. She spent her days organizing grants for domestic abuse survivors, funding children’s hospitals, and building a life deeply rooted in genuine goodness. She was respected, beloved by her community, and entirely safe.
Dominic was a fading memory. True to his word, terrified of the flash drive she still possessed, he never contacted her again. The federal government had eventually caught up with his crumbling organization on their own. Without the steady, strategic cash flow that the Sicilian deal would have provided, Dominic had made sloppy, desperate mistakes. He was currently serving a twenty-year sentence in a federal penitentiary for racketeering, his empire dissolved and divided among the very vultures he used to command.
The screen door creaked open, breaking the peaceful silence.
“Mommy, look!”
Six-year-old Noah ran onto the porch, holding up a beautifully messy, vibrant watercolor painting of a sailboat. He had Dominic’s dark hair and strong jaw, but his eyes were bright, innocent, and filled with absolute, unshadowed joy.
“Oh, sweetheart, that is absolutely beautiful!” Claire smiled, scooping the boy into her arms and pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Behind Noah walked Julian Mercer. The ruthless New York divorce attorney had spent so much time managing Claire’s legal defense that they had inevitably, organically fallen in love. Julian was everything Dominic wasn't. He was honest, fiercely protective, and he possessed a quiet, steady strength that didn't require violence to maintain. He loved Noah as his own blood, and he looked at Claire like she was the only woman in the universe.
Julian stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder as they looked at the painting.
“I think it belongs on the refrigerator,” Julian suggested, ruffling Noah’s hair.
“Definitely,” Claire agreed, leaning back into Julian’s solid, comforting embrace.

She looked out over the sprawling green lawns of her estate, holding her son tightly in her arms. She had walked through hell, bleeding and abandoned, but she had not burned. She had forged herself into titanium. She had promised her son on the day he was born that he would never be second to money, to power, or to anyone.
Looking at her beautiful, perfect family, bathed in the warm light of the setting sun, Claire knew she had kept her promise. She had stolen a mafia empire, traded it for her freedom, and built a kingdom of her very own.
