Chapter 1 - The Whisper in the Kitchen

Daniel’s face went white.

Sandra stopped breathing.

And suddenly, the slap wasn’t the biggest secret at that table anymore.

Sandra’s composure finally broke.

She hadn’t intended for Daniel to hear that.

She had whispered it to Ava in the kitchen while I was pouring water.

A cruel, venomous secret meant to break a child’s spirit in private.

She never expected a twelve-year-old to have the courage to say it aloud.

Daniel slowly turned his head toward his mother.

“What did you say to her?”

Sandra tried to recover her arrogant posture.

“She had to know the truth, Daniel!”

She pointed a manicured finger at me.

“This woman has been lying to you for twelve years! I took a DNA swab from the girl’s water glass last week. She has no Mercer blood in her!”

Sandra looked triumphant.

She expected Daniel to look at me with betrayal.

She expected my marriage to end right there over the roast beef.

She expected to win.

Instead, Daniel looked at his mother with absolute disgust.

“I know she doesn't have Mercer blood,” he said quietly.

Sandra froze.

“What?”

“I’ve always known,” Daniel said. “Because I am sterile.”
