Chapter 5 - The Father She Chose

Sandra was arrested in the boardroom.

The image of the Mercer matriarch being escorted out in handcuffs shattered her perfect reputation forever.

The board did not fire Daniel.

Instead, they voted to suspend Sandra’s voting rights indefinitely pending the criminal investigation.

She lost her power.

She lost her standing.

And she lost her son.

We never spoke to her again.

She pleaded guilty to battery of a minor to avoid jail time, accepting a permanent restraining order.

The Mercer family stopped whispering about Ava's bloodline and started whispering about Sandra's disgrace.

A year later, Ava turned thirteen.

We didn't have a massive, pretentious family dinner.

We had a backyard barbecue.

Just me, Daniel, Ava, and a few close friends.

Ava was laughing, running across the grass with our golden retriever.

The bruise on her cheek had faded long ago.

The doubt in her heart had vanished entirely.

Daniel stood beside me at the grill, watching her.

He smiled.

“She has your eyes,” he said softly.

I leaned against his shoulder.

“She has your kindness,” I replied.

Ava ran up to us, out of breath and smiling.

“Dad,” she said, holding up an empty plate. “Can I have another burger?”

Daniel laughed and handed her one.

“Anything you want, kiddo.”

She kissed his cheek and ran back into the yard.

Sandra had tried to use biology to prove Daniel wasn't a father.

Instead, she proved exactly what a real father was.

Not the man who provided the DNA.

But the man who stood up, protected his child, and burned his own kingdom down to keep her safe.
