Chapter 2 - The Truth We Chose

The dining room became dead silent.
Sandra’s triumphant smile shattered.
“No,” she whispered. “That’s impossible.”
“The chemotherapy when I was eighteen,” Daniel said. “You knew the risks. You just refused to accept them.”
I moved closer to Ava, wrapping my arms tightly around her trembling shoulders.
When Daniel and I wanted a family, we used an anonymous donor.
We agreed to keep it private.
Not because we were ashamed.
But because we knew Sandra obsessed over bloodlines, purity, and legacy.
We planned to tell Ava when she was older.
When she could understand that biology did not make a father.
Love did.
But Sandra had violated our home.
She had snooped through our private safe, found the old medical files, and weaponized a beautiful choice into a dirty secret.
And then she had struck my child.
Daniel stepped toward his mother.
He didn't yell.
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
“You broke into my home. You stole my private medical records. And you slapped my daughter.”
Sandra backed away.
“Daniel, I was protecting you!”
“You were protecting your own twisted ego.”

Daniel looked at his father, who had sat silently at the end of the table the entire time.
“We are leaving,” Daniel said. “And you will never see my family again.”
