Chapter 1 - The Suite Above the Gala

The sound of the impact echoed through the private hospital suite before anyone could understand what had happened.
Khloe Thorne was seven months pregnant.
Only an hour earlier, she had stood beside her husband, Marcus Thorne, at the annual Thorne Foundation Charity Gala. Hundreds of guests had filled the ballroom downstairs. Cameras had flashed. Donors had smiled. Reporters had asked questions about Marcus’s company, his wealth, and the baby the couple was expecting.
Khloe had smiled through all of it.
She had worn a white silk maternity gown that Marcus himself had chosen, saying it made her look like “the brightest thing in every room.”
But beneath the lights and applause, Khloe had been exhausted.
Her back hurt.
Her feet ached.
And Isabella Rossi had spent the entire evening watching her.
Isabella was the daughter of a powerful European investor and a longtime friend of Marcus’s family. She was elegant, intelligent, and impossible to ignore in a crimson gown that seemed designed to make every head turn.
For months, she had been appearing everywhere.
At business dinners.
At charity events.
At private family lunches.
Always near Marcus.
Always smiling too sweetly at Khloe.
Always finding an excuse to touch Marcus’s arm, straighten his cufflinks, or remind everyone that she had “known him before he became so busy.”
Khloe had tried to ignore it.
Marcus had insisted that Isabella was simply an old family acquaintance.
But Khloe had noticed the bitterness in Isabella’s eyes whenever Marcus placed a protective hand over Khloe’s stomach.
That evening, after the gala photographer asked for one final picture, Khloe finally slipped away.
She had come upstairs to the private hospital suite attached to the Thorne Medical Pavilion. The Thorne Foundation had funded the maternity wing years ago, and Marcus had reserved the suite for Khloe in case she needed rest during the event.
It was supposed to be safe.
Quiet.
Private.
Khloe had barely taken off her shoes when the door opened behind her.
She turned.
Isabella Rossi stood in the doorway.
Her red gown was perfect. Her hair was flawless. Her expression was calm.
Too calm.
“Isabella,” Khloe said, keeping her voice controlled. “This is a private room.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Isabella closed the door.
The click of the lock made Khloe’s stomach tighten.
For a moment, Isabella simply stared at her.
Then she smiled.
“You look tired,” she said.
“I am pregnant.”
“You are lucky.”
Khloe’s hand moved instinctively over her stomach.
“What do you want?”
Isabella stepped farther into the room.
The suite glowed with soft gold lighting. A bottle of sparkling water stood untouched on the table. Beyond the glass doors, the city shimmered under the night sky.
“You really believe Marcus loves you?” Isabella asked.
Khloe’s pulse quickened.
“This conversation is over.”
“No,” Isabella said softly. “It is finally beginning.”
Khloe moved toward the door.
Isabella stepped in front of her.
“You were never meant to be his wife,” Isabella continued. “You were supposed to be temporary. A beautiful little story from before he became who he was meant to be.”
“Move.”
“You gave him a child,” Isabella said, her voice sharpening. “That was your only useful purpose.”
Khloe’s face went cold.
“You need to leave right now.”
But Isabella did not leave.
Instead, she moved closer.
“I have loved Marcus since I was nineteen,” she whispered. “I waited while he built his company. I waited while he became the man everyone listens to. And then you appeared.”
Khloe looked at her.
“You never had Marcus.”
Isabella’s smile disappeared.
The first shove came so suddenly that Khloe did not have time to brace herself.
Her back struck the marble edge of the table.
Pain shot through her body.
Khloe gasped and reached for her stomach.
Isabella stood in front of her, breathing hard.
“You think you won because he married you?” she said. “You think a ring means anything?”
“Stop,” Khloe whispered.
But Isabella’s anger had finally broken through the polished mask she had worn for months.
She shoved Khloe again.
A crystal glass fell from the table and shattered across the marble floor.
Khloe tried to steady herself.
She tried to move away.
Then Isabella’s heel struck her side.
Khloe collapsed.
For several terrifying seconds, the room went silent except for her uneven breathing.
She curled around her stomach, tears filling her eyes.
Not because she was thinking about Isabella.
Not because she was thinking about revenge.
Only because she was thinking about her baby.
Please be okay, she thought.
Please be okay.
Then the door burst open.
“Khloe!”
Marcus stood frozen in the doorway.
Still dressed in his black tuxedo, he stared at his wife on the floor, the shattered glass, and Isabella standing above her.
Behind him, Elaine Parker, the gala coordinator, covered her mouth in horror.
Marcus looked from Khloe to Isabella.
His face changed.
At first, there was confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then something darker.
Something cold.
But before he could reach Khloe, Isabella began to cry.
Her hands trembled.
Her voice cracked perfectly.
“She attacked me,” Isabella whispered. “I was trying to defend myself.”
Marcus did not answer.
He dropped to his knees beside Khloe.
“Don’t move,” he said, his voice shaking. “Khloe, look at me.”
Khloe forced her eyes open.
“Baby,” she whispered.
“I know. Help is coming.”
Marcus removed his tuxedo jacket and covered her shoulders.
Then he looked up at Isabella.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Marcus’s eyes were no longer the eyes of a man trying to understand a misunderstanding.
May you like
They were the eyes of a husband who had just watched his entire world fall to the floor.
And somewhere above them, hidden inside the hospital’s discreet security system, a camera had recorded every second.
