Chapter 3 - The Lie That Fell Apart in Public

Isabella Rossi was waiting in a private consultation room when the detectives arrived.

She had changed her story twice already.

First, she claimed Khloe shoved her.

Then she said Khloe threatened her.

Then she insisted that Khloe had become “unstable due to pregnancy stress.”

But there was one problem with every version.

The video.

Detective Ava Ramirez placed a printed still image from the footage on the table.

It showed Isabella’s hand against Khloe’s shoulder.

Another image showed Khloe falling backward.

A third showed Isabella lifting her heel.

Isabella’s face went white.

“This doesn’t show what she said to me,” Isabella whispered.

Detective Ramirez folded her hands.

“It shows you physically assaulting a pregnant woman.”

“She provoked me.”

“Did she?”

“She knew Marcus and I had history.”

“Did that give you permission to attack her?”

Isabella said nothing.

Downstairs, the charity gala was still ending.

Guests were leaving in confusion. Rumors moved through the ballroom faster than champagne.

Something happened upstairs.

Khloe was hurt.

Marcus Thorne had stopped the event.

Isabella Rossi was being questioned by police.

By midnight, several guests had already posted vague messages online.

No names.

No details.

But enough to attract attention.

Marcus’s public-relations director called him repeatedly.

He did not answer.

His focus remained on Khloe.

The next morning, after an overnight observation period, Dr. Chen cleared Khloe to leave the hospital under strict instructions: rest, hydration, limited stress, and immediate return if she felt pain or changes in the baby’s movement.

Marcus refused to let her return to the Thorne mansion.

“Where will we go?” Khloe asked.

“To the lake house.”

“What about the press?”

“They can wait.”

“What about Isabella?”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“She can answer for what she did.”

At the lake house, Khloe finally slept.

Not peacefully.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Isabella’s red dress, the marble floor, and the look on Marcus’s face when he found her.

But when she woke, Marcus was beside her.

Not working.

Not taking calls.

Just sitting there.

“I should have listened when you told me she made you uncomfortable,” he said.

Khloe looked at him.

“I should have pushed harder.”

“No,” Marcus replied. “You should never have had to convince me to protect you.”

That afternoon, Daniel arrived with legal counsel.

He brought more troubling news.

Isabella’s family had already begun making calls.

They were powerful investors in several international companies connected to Marcus’s business.

They wanted the incident handled privately.

They wanted an apology from Khloe.

They wanted the footage sealed.

Khloe stared at Daniel.

“They want me to apologize?”

“They are claiming Isabella suffered emotional distress.”

Marcus laughed once.

It was cold and humorless.

“Then they can claim it in court.”

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Marcus, this could become a major business conflict.”

Marcus looked toward Khloe.

“She attacked my wife and unborn child.”

“I understand.”

“No,” Marcus said. “You understand numbers. You understand headlines. But you do not understand what I saw when I walked into that room.”

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus’s voice broke slightly.

“I thought I was too late.”

Khloe reached for his hand.

Marcus looked at her, and the anger in his face softened.

Then Daniel opened another file.

“There is something else,” he said.

Before the attack, Isabella had accessed restricted hospital records.

She had used a connection through a hospital board member to obtain information about Khloe’s appointments.

Her schedule.

Her room assignment.

The exact timing of the gala.

This had not been a spontaneous fight.

It had been planned.

Khloe felt cold.

“She knew I would be there.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“She waited for me.”

“Yes.”

Marcus stood.

The room seemed to change around him.

“Then this is not just assault,” he said. “This is stalking.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the lake.

And far away, in a police interview room, Isabella finally realized that she had not merely lost Marcus.

She had created the evidence that would expose everything she had been hiding.
