Chapter 2 - The Footage No One Could Deny

The emergency medical team arrived within three minutes.
To Khloe, it felt like hours.
She remembered bright lights.
A nurse checking her pulse.
Someone asking her to stay awake.
Marcus holding her hand so tightly that she could feel the tremor in his fingers.
She remembered Isabella standing in the corner, crying into her hands while telling anyone who would listen that Khloe had “become emotional” and attacked her without warning.
But Khloe did not have the strength to respond.
As they wheeled her toward the maternity wing, she heard Marcus speak.
His voice was low.
Controlled.
Far more frightening than shouting.
“No one leaves this floor,” he said.
Then the elevator doors closed.
Dr. Naomi Chen was waiting when Khloe arrived in the examination room.
She was one of the best maternal-fetal specialists in Chicago and had known Khloe throughout the pregnancy. Her calm face was the first thing that made Khloe feel she might survive the night.
“We are going to take care of you,” Dr. Chen said. “But I need you to breathe slowly.”
Khloe nodded, though tears rolled down her face.
“Is the baby okay?”
“We are checking.”
That was not the answer Khloe wanted.
It was the answer she feared.
Outside the room, Marcus paced like a man trapped inside a nightmare.
Elaine Parker sat nearby, pale and silent.
Then a tall gray-haired man entered the corridor.
His name was Daniel Mercer.
He was Khloe’s uncle.
And unlike the wealthy people downstairs who only knew Khloe as Marcus Thorne’s wife, Daniel had known her before the fame, before the mansion, before the cameras.
He had raised her after her parents died in a car accident when she was sixteen.
Daniel Mercer was also the chairman of the hospital board.
He looked at Marcus once and said, “Tell me exactly what happened.”
Marcus did not soften the story.
“Isabella attacked her.”
“Did anyone see it?”
“Elaine came in with me.”
Daniel looked toward Elaine.
Elaine nodded, her face tight with guilt.
“I saw Khloe on the floor,” she said. “I saw Isabella standing over her. But I did not see the beginning.”
Daniel turned to the hospital security chief.
“Pull every camera feed from this floor.”
The chief hesitated.
“Sir, the private suite has limited recording due to patient privacy protocols.”
“Does it have hallway footage?”
“Yes.”
“Does it have the emergency safety camera?”
The security chief’s expression changed.
“Yes.”
The Thorne Medical Pavilion had an internal safety system designed to activate when a patient was left unattended in a private room. The camera did not record continuously. It activated when unusual motion, glass breakage, or emergency sounds were detected.
The shattered crystal had triggered it.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Get it now.”
Meanwhile, inside the examination room, Khloe stared at the monitor.
The baby’s heartbeat filled the room.
Fast.
Uneven at first.
Then steadier.
Dr. Chen looked at Khloe and gave a small nod.
“The baby is stable.”
Khloe began crying.
Marcus entered the moment Dr. Chen allowed it.
He sat beside the bed and pressed his forehead against Khloe’s hand.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Khloe looked at him.
“For what?”
“For not seeing what she was doing. For letting her near you. For thinking she was just jealous and harmless.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
“She hated me.”
“I should have protected you.”
“You are protecting me now.”
Marcus looked up, his eyes red.
“No. I’m going to do more than that.”
At that moment, Daniel entered with a tablet in his hand.
No one spoke.
The security chief stood behind him.
Marcus rose slowly.
“Is it there?”
Daniel nodded.
“It is all there.”
They watched the footage in silence.
The camera angle was high and distant, but clear.
Isabella entering the suite.
Locking the door.
Cornering Khloe.
Speaking to her.
The first shove.
The second shove.
The kick.
Khloe falling.
There was no misunderstanding.
No self-defense.
No confusion.
Only evidence.
Marcus did not move during the video.
Not once.
When it ended, Isabella’s voice could be heard outside the room.
She was still insisting she had been attacked.

Then Daniel placed the tablet down.
“Hospital security has contacted police,” he said. “And Isabella Rossi is about to discover that her tears are no longer useful.”
