Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile

The investigation revealed more than anyone expected.

Isabella had not simply been jealous.

She had been obsessed.

For nearly a year, she had tracked Marcus’s schedule through mutual acquaintances. She had arranged invitations to events she knew Khloe would attend. She had sent anonymous messages to gossip accounts suggesting Marcus’s marriage was failing.

She had even paid a former assistant to photograph Khloe leaving medical appointments.

When detectives searched Isabella’s phone, they found drafts of messages she had never sent.

Marcus deserves someone stronger.

Khloe is not good enough for him.

Once the baby is born, he will realize what he lost.

There were photographs of Marcus taken from a distance.

Screenshots of family interviews.

Old pictures from college.

And a note written the week before the gala:

Private suite. No cameras except safety feed. Make her panic. Make Marcus see she is unstable.

But Isabella had made one fatal mistake.

She assumed the hospital camera would protect her lie.

She believed the footage would be unclear.

She believed no one would ever see the conversation before the attack.

She was wrong.

Daniel Mercer made certain the original recording was preserved, encrypted, and transferred directly to investigators.

The story broke publicly two days later.

A major news outlet reported that a prominent investor’s daughter had been charged after an alleged assault on a pregnant philanthropist during a charity event.

Names were initially withheld.

But by the end of the day, everyone knew.

The internet divided quickly.

Some people claimed Khloe was using Marcus’s wealth to destroy Isabella.

Others questioned why Isabella had entered a private hospital suite in the first place.

Then the full legal complaint was filed.

The hospital security stills became public record.

And the arguments ended.

At home, Khloe watched none of it.

She had turned off her social-media accounts.

She spent her days resting, reading, and walking slowly beside the lake with Marcus.

But healing did not happen because the internet believed her.

Healing happened in quieter moments.

When Marcus made breakfast without checking his phone.

When he asked how she was feeling and waited for a real answer.

When he held her at night without trying to fix anything.

One evening, Khloe found him standing alone on the dock.

The sunset reflected gold across the water.

Marcus did not turn when she approached.

“You should be resting,” he said.

“I am resting.”

He looked back at her.

His face was tired.

“I keep thinking about the moment I opened that door.”

Khloe slipped her hand into his.

“Marcus.”

“I should have been there sooner.”

“You cannot blame yourself for what she did.”

“But I let her stay in our lives because I did not want conflict with her family.”

Khloe was quiet.

That was true.

Marcus had always avoided confronting Isabella. He had called her behavior awkward, immature, overly familiar.

He had never called it dangerous.

Until it was.

“I need you to promise me something,” Khloe said.

“Anything.”

“Never dismiss me when I tell you someone makes me feel unsafe.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I promise.”

“And do not protect me only after something terrible happens.”

His eyes filled.

“I understand.”

Khloe touched his face.

“I know you love me. But love has to listen.”

He kissed her forehead.

“I will listen.”

The next morning, Marcus held a press conference.

He stood before dozens of cameras, but he did not discuss hospital details or exploit Khloe’s trauma.

He made one statement.

“My wife was assaulted while pregnant. We will allow the legal process to proceed. I will not tolerate anyone using influence, wealth, or false narratives to silence victims.”

A reporter shouted, “Will you pursue damages against the Rossi family?”

Marcus paused.

“We will pursue accountability.”

That answer made headlines.

But another revelation came that same afternoon.

The police had found evidence linking Isabella’s father, Lorenzo Rossi, to the hospital-record breach.

He had not ordered the attack.

But he had used his influence to help his daughter access private information.

And he had tried to pressure hospital officials into deleting the recording.

Suddenly, Isabella’s attack was no longer the only scandal.

Her entire family empire was under investigation.

And the woman who believed she could destroy Khloe’s marriage had become the person who exposed her own family’s corruption.
