Chapter 1: The Ghost at the Altar

The silence in the ballroom was deafening. Three hundred high-society guests stared in absolute shock as the groom, Tony, stepped down from the pristine white altar. He didn't look at his wealthy bride. He didn't look at the extravagant floral arrangements.

His eyes were locked entirely on the maid in the tan uniform.

She was kneeling on the polished marble floor, shielding a weeping five-year-old boy. The boy was Leo—Tony’s son from his late first wife.

Tony’s breath hitched in his throat as he slowly walked closer. He recognized the gentle way she stroked Leo’s hair. He recognized the silver locket hanging from her neck—a locket he had drawn a picture of when he was just seven years old, right before she vanished.

"Helen?" Tony whispered again, his voice cracking with twenty years of suppressed grief. "Mom?"

Helen looked up. Her face was lined with age and years of grueling physical labor, but her eyes held the same bottomless, unconditional love he remembered. Tears spilled down her weathered cheeks.

"You've grown into such a handsome man, Tony," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Tony dropped to his knees right there in his custom tailored tuxedo. He didn't care about the gasps of the wealthy guests. He wrapped his arms around the maid and his young son, pulling them both into a desperate, crushing embrace.

For two decades, he had been told his mother abandoned him. But she was here. She had always been here.
