Chapter 2: The Delusion

As Elena moved methodically down the aisle, the whispers of the elite crowd rose to a fever pitch. Eyes darted between the imposing figure in the black trench coat and the golden couple at the altar. Beatrice continued to squawk from the front row, her face turning an unattractive shade of magenta, completely ignoring the sheer presence Elena commanded. Elena’s eyes remained locked on the altar. She didn't look at the wealthy socialites who had mocked her for years. She didn't look at her former mother-in-law. She looked straight ahead.

Julian, standing beneath the crystal chandelier, let out a heavy, incredibly dramatic sigh. He pinched the bridge of his nose, his face contorting into an expression of profound annoyance. To him, this was nothing more than the desperate, pathetic last stand of a woman who couldn't accept that she had been upgraded. He adjusted the cuffs of his white tuxedo, looking down at Elena from his slightly elevated position on the altar, his eyes dripping with a mix of pity and total humiliation.

"Elena, please," Julian muttered, just loud enough for the first few rows to hear. "Have some dignity. You're embarrassing yourself. It’s over."

But the true center of the delusion stood right beside him. Arabella, the supposed European heiress, was a vision of excessive extravagance. She wore an over-the-top, custom lace wedding gown that looked like it weighed fifty pounds, trailing heavily behind her. Her face was painted with heavy, flawless bridal makeup, designed to make her look like an innocent angel. But as Elena approached, the angelic facade slipped.

Arabella wrapped both of her arms tightly around Julian’s bicep, pressing her body against him in a territorial display. A triumphant, genuinely evil smirk spread across her glossed lips. She looked down at Elena’s rounded stomach, her eyes flashing with cruel, victorious delight. She reveled in the thought that she had stolen a billionaire husband from a pregnant woman. It fed her ego.

Elena stopped right at the base of the altar, less than three feet from the golden couple. The music had stopped entirely. The silence was deafening, save for the rustling of the wind through the white roses.

Arabella leaned forward slightly, looking down her nose at Elena. The smirk widened, revealing her perfect, incredibly expensive teeth.

"You lost," Arabella whispered, her voice laced with venom and arrogant superiority. She squeezed Julian’s arm, pressing her cheek against his white tuxedo jacket. "Look around. Look at him. He chose me. You're nothing but a mistake he’s trying to forget. Now waddle away before they drag you out."

Elena didn't flinch. She didn't cry. The expected tears of a heartbroken, discarded woman never came. Instead, Elena looked at Arabella with a calm, clinical detachment. The corner of Elena’s mouth twitched upward into a small, terrifying smile. She reached a hand into the deep pocket of her black trench coat. The absolute certainty in her eyes made Julian’s blood run suddenly, inexplicably cold.
