Chapter 4: The Unraveling

The transformation of the beautiful, smug bride was instantaneous and horrifying. The moment the red and blue lights hit Arabella’s face, all the color completely drained from her skin, leaving her looking sickly and hollow beneath her heavy, expensive makeup. The triumphant smirk was wiped away, replaced by absolute, paralyzing terror.
Julian stared at the mugshots on the altar. His brain struggled to process the image of his glamorous, aristocratic bride holding a booking slate in a grim European police station. He picked one up with a trembling, sweaty hand. The woman in the photo looked exactly like the woman clinging to his arm, but the eyes were cold, dead, and deeply criminal. The illusion of his perfect life, his perfect revenge against his "common" ex-wife, shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
"Julian," Arabella choked out, her voice trembling violently. She clawed at his white tuxedo jacket, her perfectly manicured nails catching on the silk lapel. Sweat began to bead heavily on her forehead, ruining her flawless foundation. "Julian, it's a lie! It’s a deep fake! She’s just a jealous, crazy bitch! You have to believe me!"
But Julian wasn't looking at her with love anymore. He looked at her with utter, stomach-turning disgust. He violently ripped his arm away from her grasp, stumbling backward until he hit the floral archway. He looked like a man who had just realized he was holding a venomous snake.
"Don't touch me!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with humiliation and shock. The golden boy was completely broken.
The heavy, thudding footsteps of heavily armed federal agents echoed from the back of the aisle, rushing past the panicked, screaming guests. Arabella looked frantically from the advancing officers to Julian's disgusted face, to the cold, victorious eyes of the pregnant woman standing below her. The walls were closing in. The con was up.
Panic overtook her entirely. With a guttural scream, Arabella turned to run. She lunged toward the manicured bushes behind the altar, desperate to escape into the massive estate grounds.
But her vanity proved to be her ultimate downfall. She had demanded an over-the-top, outrageously expensive gown with a ten-foot lace train to show off the Sterling wealth. As she sprinted, her incredibly high, stiletto heels caught violently in the thick layers of heavy lace.

With a sickening rip of expensive fabric, Arabella pitched forward. She hit the wooden deck of the altar hard, her hands scrambling uselessly against the floorboards. The majestic, beautiful bride was reduced to a panicked, tangled mess on the ground, screaming hysterically as the harsh police lights flashed over her ruined dress.
Beatrice Sterling, witnessing her pristine, high-society dream turn into a literal police raid, let out a high-pitched, breathless wail. The ridiculous pink hat tumbled from her head into the dirt as she collapsed backward into her chair, clutching her chest in sheer, mortifying horror.
