The Bride He Left Behind / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Door He Should Never Have Opened

The brass handle turned softly beneath Declan Whitmore’s hand.

Outside the penthouse windows, Manhattan glittered beneath an October sky. Inside, white roses, untouched champagne, and the remains of our wedding surrounded me.

I was still wearing my gown when Declan picked up his tuxedo jacket.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

He checked his phone. “I have to see Brier.”

His ex-girlfriend.

“We got married six hours ago.”

“She saw the wedding photos,” he said impatiently. “She’s hysterical.”

“You’re leaving your wife on her wedding night to comfort another woman?”

“You’re making this dramatic, Sarah.”

I stared at him. For years, he had made me feel unreasonable whenever I noticed his late-night calls, secret dinners, and the way Brier’s name appeared too often in his life.

“I’m warning you,” I said. “If you walk out that door, nothing will be the same.”

Declan laughed. “Don’t threaten me because you’re jealous.”

Then he left.

The lock clicked.

For a few seconds, I stood alone in the middle of the suite. Then I poured myself champagne and called Helen Ward, the attorney who had prepared documents for this exact moment.

“Did he leave?” Helen asked.

“Yes.”

“Are you sure you want to proceed?”

I looked at the city lights.

“Yes.”

At midnight, Declan’s private accounts were frozen. His corporate cards were suspended. His authority over the Whitmore family trust disappeared.

At 12:15 a.m., while he sat with Brier in a private lounge downtown, his phone began ringing.

His face turned white as he answered.

“What do you mean my access has been revoked?”

Then he asked the only question that mattered.

“Sarah did this?”

In the penthouse sixty floors above him, I lifted my glass.

May you like

“Yes,” I whispered.

“I did.”
