Chapter 2 - The Accounts That Vanished at Midnight

Declan returned to the penthouse at 2:40 a.m.

His face was pale, his tie was loose, and anger followed him into the room before he spoke.

“What did you do?”

I sat near the window in a silk robe, reviewing documents on my laptop.

“Good morning to you too.”

“You froze my accounts.”

“No,” I said calmly. “I froze accounts connected to the Whitmore family trust.”

“I run Whitmore Capital.”

“You used to.”

He walked toward me. “You have no right.”

I turned my laptop around.

On the screen were transfers from company accounts to a consulting business called Brier & Co. There were luxury apartment payments, travel expenses, and invoices for services Brier had never provided.

“Did you think I wouldn’t notice?” I asked.

Declan’s expression changed.

“They were business expenses.”

“Your mistress charged Whitmore Capital eighty thousand dollars for ‘emotional brand strategy.’”

He said nothing.

I continued. “Your grandmother suspected something before she died. That is why she gave me the ring. That is why she gave me voting control through her trust.”

His anger turned to fear.

“You planned this?”

“I hoped I wouldn’t need to.”

He grabbed the back of a chair. “Sarah, we can fix this.”

“There is no we tonight.”

At eight in the morning, Helen sent the board evidence of financial misconduct. At nine, Declan’s executive access was suspended. At ten, every major investor received notice that an internal audit had begun.

Declan stared at his phone as message after message arrived.

“You’re ruining me,” he said.

I stood and looked directly at him.

“No, Declan. I’m simply refusing to be ruined with you.”

He left the penthouse again, but this time he did not walk out like a powerful husband leaving an emotional wife.

He walked out like a man realizing the woman he underestimated had quietly taken the keys to his entire empire.
