## Chapter 2: The Forced Hand

“Sign it, Emily,” Vanessa urged, stepping closer. “It’s better this way. Think of the stress on the baby. Do you really want to spend your third trimester in a legal battle you can’t win?”
Emily backed away, her hand fumbling for her pocket where her phone should be. It was gone. She realized with a jolt of horror that it must have been taken from her nightstand while she napped. “You’ve been planning this,” Emily whispered.
“Planning?” Beatrice scoffed. “I’ve been waiting for the right moment to excise a cancer. You were always a temporary fixture. Now that the heir is almost here, you’ve served your purpose.”
Vanessa shoved the pen into Emily’s hand. The cold metal felt like ice. “The assets, Emily. The estate in David’s name, the trust funds—all of it goes to Beatrice for ‘safekeeping’ until the child is of age. You sign, you get out, you live a quiet life. You refuse, and we call the private security team waiting at the gate. They’ll report an ‘unstable’ mother who fell down the stairs.”

Emily’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked at the document. It wasn't just a divorce settlement. it was a total erasure of her existence. They wanted to steal her child and her dignity. She looked at the two women. They weren't just greedy; they were monsters. “I won’t do it,” Emily said, her voice gaining a sudden, sharp clarity. “David loves me. He would never agree to this.”
Beatrice smiled, a terrifying expression that didn't reach her eyes. “David loves what I tell him to love. Now, sign the paper, or I stop being polite.” She nodded to Vanessa, who grabbed Emily’s wrist, forcing the pen toward the signature line.
