## Chapter 9: A New Dawn

The hospital was a blur of white lights and soft beeps. David never left Emily’s side. He held her hand through every surge of pain, whispering apologies and promises into her ear. He told her about how he’d found the drugged water in the guest house, how he’d forced himself to vomit, and how he’d crawled to the window to see the truth.
“I should have protected you from her,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
“We protected each other,” Emily whispered. “The recordings… they’re safe.”
“They’re with the DA,” David assured her. “They’re going away for a long time, Emily. Both of them. And the inheritance? I’m liquidating the Sterling holdings. We’re starting over. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere with no gates and no secrets.”
At 4:12 AM, the room was filled with the most beautiful sound Emily had ever heard: a loud, healthy cry.
The nurse placed a small, bundled weight onto Emily’s chest. A boy. He had David’s nose and Emily’s stubborn chin. He was perfect. He was the only inheritance that mattered.

“Look at him,” David breathed, tears finally streaming down his face. “He’s a Carter. Not a Sterling. Just a Carter.”
Emily looked down at her son, then at the man who had fought his way through a drug-induced haze to save her. The storm had passed. The glass inheritance had shattered, and in its place, they had something unbreakable.
