## Chapter 10: The Sterling Ghost

Six months later.

The sun rose over a modest, sun-drenched cottage in the hills of Vermont. There were no marble floors here, only warm pine and the smell of wildflower meadows. Emily sat on the porch, rocking a sleeping baby Leo in her arms.

David walked out, carrying two mugs of coffee. He looked younger, the stress of the Sterling empire wiped from his face. He sat beside her, resting his head on her shoulder.

“I got the final word from the lawyers today,” David said quietly. “Beatrice’s final appeal was denied. She’ll be serving fifteen years. Vanessa got ten.”

Emily took a sip of her coffee, feeling a profound sense of peace. The name ‘Sterling’ no longer carried weight. They had sold the estate, donated the majority of the old wealth to various charities for at-risk mothers, and kept only what they needed to live a simple, happy life.

“Do you ever miss it?” Emily asked.

David looked at her, then at Leo, then at the mountains stretching out before them. “The house? The money? Not for a second. I spent my whole life in a cage made of gold. I didn't know what air tasted like until I met you.”

He kissed her forehead. “We’re okay, Emily. We’re finally okay.”

Emily leaned back, closing her eyes. She no longer looked for signs or omens. She didn't need to. The weight on her chest was a healthy, growing boy, and the hand in hers was steady and true. The past was a ghost, and the future was wide open, bright and beautiful.

They had lost a fortune, but they had won the world. And as Leo stirred in his sleep, reaching out to grab his father’s finger, Emily knew that this was the only legacy that had ever truly mattered.
