Part 4: The Secret Buried Six Years Ago

Adrian barely slept.

The investigator’s report lay open on his desk.

One sentence kept pulling him back.

“Evidence suggests Victoria Hawthorne may not be Ethan’s biological mother.”

It sounded impossible.

Absurd.

Six years ago, Adrian had been standing beside Victoria in the delivery room.

He remembered the fear.

The excitement.

The tears in her eyes when she first held the baby.

At least…

He thought he remembered.

Now he wasn’t so sure.

At three in the morning, he opened an old family album.

Thousands of photographs filled its pages.

Charity galas.

Business awards.

Luxury vacations.

Perfect smiles.

Perfect appearances.

Perfect lies.

Then he noticed something strange.

Victoria was pregnant in very few photographs.

In fact, there was a gap of nearly five months.

Almost no public appearances.

Almost no pictures.

At the time, she had explained it as a difficult pregnancy.

No one questioned it.

Now Adrian questioned everything.

The next morning, the investigator returned with more information.

His expression was serious.

“Mr. Hawthorne, there’s something you need to see.”

He handed over a folder.

Inside were medical records.

Not complete records.

Copies.

Fragments.

But enough to reveal a disturbing pattern.

Victoria had never been admitted to the hospital under her own name on the day Ethan was born.

Instead, another woman had occupied the delivery suite.

A woman whose identity had been sealed.

Legally protected.

Hidden.

Adrian looked up.

“Why would a hospital do that?”

The investigator hesitated.

“Surrogacy agreements. Confidential adoptions. High-profile clients.”

Adrian felt his stomach drop.

“Can we find her?”

The investigator nodded slowly.

“Maybe.”

Meanwhile, Elena was helping Ethan with his schoolwork in the nursery.

The boy seemed calmer than usual.

For the first time in weeks, he smiled.

A genuine smile.

The kind children wear when they finally feel safe.

“Miss Elena?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think people can stop being angry?”

She looked at him.

“Sometimes.”

“What if they’ve always been angry?”

The question broke her heart.

Because children didn’t ask questions like that unless they had lived through something painful.

Elena closed the workbook.

“Why are you asking?”

Ethan stared out the window.

“Because I don’t remember Mom ever being happy.”

The room fell silent.

Then Ethan added something that made Elena’s blood run cold.

“She used to tell me I wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Elena froze.

“What do you mean?”

The boy shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

He looked confused.

“She said it when she thought I was asleep.”

That night Elena told Adrian everything.

Every word.

Every memory.

Every strange comment Ethan had shared.

As she spoke, Adrian’s face grew darker.

Not with anger.

With guilt.

The guilt of a father realizing how much he had missed.

For years he had convinced himself that providing money was enough.

That building a future for his son mattered more than being present.

Now he understood.

Children don’t remember stock prices.

They don’t remember luxury homes.

They remember who sat beside them when they were afraid.

And Ethan had been afraid for years.

Just after midnight, another call arrived from the investigator.

This time he sounded shaken.

“Mr. Hawthorne, we located the woman.”

Adrian stood immediately.

“What woman?”

“The one connected to the delivery records.”

Silence.

Then:

“Her name is Sarah Bennett.”

Adrian had never heard the name before.

“Where is she?”

“Ohio.”

The investigator paused.

“And there’s something else.”

“What?”

“She’s been receiving monthly payments for six years.”

Adrian felt his pulse quicken.

“From who?”

The answer came quietly.

“Victoria.”

The room went completely still.

Elena looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked at the report.

Neither spoke.

Because both were thinking the same thing.

Why would Victoria secretly pay a woman every month for six years?

The answer was becoming terrifyingly obvious.

But before they could discuss it further, a loud crash echoed through the mansion.

Glass shattered downstairs.

Then another crash.

And another.

Adrian rushed from the office.

Elena close behind.

They found Victoria standing in the grand living room.

Surrounded by broken picture frames.

Family photographs covered the floor.

Some had been ripped apart.

Others smashed beyond recognition.

Victoria stood in the center of the destruction.

Breathing heavily.

Her eyes red.

Not from sadness.

From rage.

In her hand was a newspaper.

The headline revealed everything.

A journalist had somehow discovered rumors about the investigation.

The family’s secrets were beginning to leak.

Victoria slowly looked up.

Then directly at Adrian.

For a long moment nobody spoke.

Finally, she laughed.

A strange laugh.

Almost desperate.

“You want the truth?” she asked.

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“Yes.”

Victoria nodded.

“Fine.”

She pointed toward a photograph of Ethan lying shattered on the floor.

Then she delivered the words that changed everything.

“I never wanted that child.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Painful.

Unforgiving.

Elena felt sick.

Adrian stared at his wife in disbelief.

But Victoria wasn’t finished.

For years she had hidden behind masks.

Behind money.

Behind beauty.

Behind social status.

Now the masks were cracking.

And the woman underneath was finally beginning to emerge.

“You think this story is about Ethan?” she said.

Her voice trembled.

“No.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

The first genuine emotion anyone had seen from her in years.

“This story started long before Ethan was born.”

She looked directly at Adrian.

And whispered:

“It started with the baby we lost.”

Adrian froze.

Because that was a secret neither of them had spoken about in nearly seven years.

A tragedy buried so deeply that even Elena had never heard of it.

But now…

The past was coming back.

And it was about to destroy everything.
