Part 5: The Child They Never Spoke About

The room fell silent.
Even the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed louder than usual.
Victoria stood among the broken picture frames.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly.
For years she had protected this secret.
Buried it.
Locked it away.
Pretended it never happened.
And now it was finally coming back.
“It started with the baby we lost.”
The words hung heavily in the air.
Adrian stared at her.
For a moment he wasn’t the billionaire businessman.
He wasn’t the powerful investor.
He was simply a man being dragged back into the worst memory of his life.
Seven years earlier.
Before Ethan.
Before the mansion felt empty.
Before their marriage began falling apart.
Victoria had been pregnant.
Almost eight months.
They had already chosen a name.
A nursery had been prepared.
Tiny clothes filled the closets.
Everything seemed perfect.
Until one terrible night.
Victoria stopped feeling movement.
At first she told herself everything was fine.
Then came panic.
Then the hospital.
Then the waiting.
Hours later, a doctor entered the room.
Adrian still remembered the expression on his face.
The sadness.
The hesitation.
The pity.
No parent ever forgets that look.
The baby was gone.
A little girl.
Stillborn.
The grief shattered them.
But it shattered Victoria differently.
Adrian cried.
Mourned.
Eventually returned to work.
Victoria never recovered.
For months she refused to leave the house.
She stopped seeing friends.
Stopped answering calls.
Stopped speaking about the future.
The woman who once loved cameras and attention disappeared.
And in her place emerged someone colder.
Someone harder.
Someone who seemed permanently angry at the world.
“I blamed myself,” Victoria whispered.
A tear slid down her face.
“I blamed my body.”
Nobody spoke.
For once, even Elena remained silent.
Because pain like that deserved silence.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You know what everyone told me?”
Her eyes fixed on Adrian.
“They said we’d have another child.”
She shook her head.
“As if one child could replace another.”
The room remained still.
Then she continued.
“I became obsessed.”
Adrian’s expression slowly changed.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Because now pieces of the past were beginning to fit together.
The endless doctor appointments.
The private consultations.
The secret meetings.
The months she disappeared from public life.
Victoria looked down at the shattered photographs.
“When I found out I couldn’t safely carry another pregnancy…”
Her voice cracked.
“…something inside me broke.”
Adrian felt a chill.
Years ago she had told him she needed time.
She never told him the entire truth.
Never told him what doctors had actually said.
Never told him how deeply she was suffering.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked quietly.
Victoria laughed again.
This time there was no cruelty.
Only exhaustion.
“Because you were busy saving companies.”
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Adrian looked away.
Because part of it was true.
After their loss he buried himself in work.
He convinced himself he was being strong.
But maybe he had simply been running.
Running from grief.
Running from helplessness.
Running from his wife.
Running from himself.
Victoria slowly sat down.
For the first time she looked older than her years.
Tired.
Broken.
Human.
“Then someone introduced me to Sarah Bennett.”
Elena immediately looked up.
The name changed everything.
Sarah.
The woman receiving secret payments.
The woman connected to Ethan’s birth.
Victoria closed her eyes.
“She was a surrogate.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Finally, the truth had begun.
“We signed agreements.”
Victoria’s voice was barely audible.
“Everything was legal.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Then why hide it?”
Victoria opened her eyes.
And for the first time fear appeared.
Real fear.
Because the next part was worse.
Much worse.
“Because Sarah changed her mind.”
The room went silent.
“What do you mean?” Adrian asked.
Victoria swallowed.
“After Ethan was born, she wanted to keep him.”
Elena felt her heart pound.
Victoria continued.
“She begged us.”
The memories seemed painful now.
“She cried.”
Another tear escaped.
“She said she had carried him for nine months. She said she loved him.”
Adrian looked stunned.
None of this had ever been mentioned.
Not once.
Not in seven years.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.
Victoria lowered her head.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That you’d feel sorry for her.”
Her voice trembled.
“That you’d see her as the mother.”
The sentence echoed through the room.
For years Victoria had feared exactly that.
Not losing Ethan.
Losing her place in his life.
Losing her identity.
Losing the only thing she believed could heal her grief.
A child.
Any child.
Even if she didn’t know how to love him properly.
Even if every time she looked at him she remembered the daughter she lost.
The realization hit Elena suddenly.
Victoria never hated Ethan.
Not exactly.
She hated what Ethan reminded her of.
Every day.
Every year.
Every birthday.
He was living proof of both her greatest wish and her greatest wound.
And she had never healed.
But something still didn’t make sense.
Elena finally spoke.
“If that’s true…”
Victoria looked at her.
“Then why the note?”
Silence.
A long silence.
The question changed everything.
Because grief explained cruelty.
It explained distance.
It explained emotional neglect.
But it did not explain that note.
The one hidden in the file.
The one that said Ethan would no longer be necessary after the trust transfer.
Victoria’s face suddenly lost all color.
Adrian noticed immediately.
“So the note is real.”
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Who wrote it?”
Nothing.
“Victoria.”
Still nothing.
Then slowly…
Very slowly…
She whispered:
“I didn’t write those words.”
The room froze.
Elena’s eyes widened.
Adrian stared at her.
Victoria looked genuinely terrified.
More terrified than she had been all night.
Because now another possibility emerged.
Someone else had access to those files.
Someone else knew about Ethan.
Someone else knew about the trust.
Someone else might be manipulating everything from the shadows.
And there was only one person with that kind of access.
Marcus Lang.
The financial consultant.
The man Victoria had been secretly meeting for two years.
The man everyone assumed was her lover.
The man who had suddenly become the most dangerous person in the story.
Just then Adrian’s phone rang.
The investigator.
He answered immediately.
The voice on the other end sounded urgent.
“Mr. Hawthorne…”
“What happened?”
A pause.
Then:
“We found Sarah Bennett.”
Adrian stood.
“Where is she?”
The investigator’s next words sent a chill through the room.
“We found her.”
Another pause.
May you like
“But someone got to her first.”
