Part 9: The Man Behind Marcus

The basement fell silent.

Marcus wasn’t the one they should have been looking for.

There was someone above him.

Someone pulling the strings.

Someone powerful enough to manipulate trust funds, legal records, family secrets, and people’s lives.

Adrian stared at the investigator.

“What do you mean?”

The investigator swallowed.

“The financial transfers didn’t end with Marcus.”

He opened a file on his tablet.

Several names appeared.

Offshore accounts.

Shell companies.

Private trusts.

Then one name stood out.

A name Adrian knew immediately.

His face turned pale.

“No.”

Victoria looked at him.

“What is it?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

He simply stared at the screen.

The investigator finally spoke.

“The money trail leads to Richard Hawthorne.”

The room froze.

Ethan looked confused.

Sarah looked stunned.

Victoria whispered:

“Richard?”

Adrian slowly sat down.

Because Richard Hawthorne wasn’t just anyone.

Richard was his uncle.

His father’s younger brother.

The man who helped build the Hawthorne empire decades ago.

The man Adrian had trusted his entire life.

The man who attended every family holiday.

Every birthday.

Every funeral.

Every major decision.

The man Ethan called Uncle Richard.

And suddenly nothing made sense anymore.

“My uncle would never do this.”

The words sounded weak even to Adrian.

The investigator remained silent.

Then handed him another document.

An old legal agreement.

Signed twenty years earlier.

Adrian recognized the signature immediately.

His father’s.

As he read, his expression changed.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then disbelief.

“What is it?” Elena asked.

Adrian looked up slowly.

“My father changed the inheritance before he died.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

“He left most of the family’s private assets to Ethan.”

The room fell silent.

Even Victoria hadn’t known.

Richard hadn’t inherited control.

Neither had Adrian.

The largest portion of the hidden Hawthorne fortune was legally protected for the first direct grandchild.

Ethan.

The realization hit everyone at once.

Marcus never wanted Ethan personally.

He wanted access to what Ethan represented.

Billions.

Generational wealth.

Control.

Power.

The investigator nodded.

“Richard knew the terms.”

“And if Ethan disappeared?”

Nobody wanted to ask the question.

But Adrian did.

The investigator’s voice was quiet.

“Richard would become temporary trustee.”

The silence that followed felt endless.

Because now everything made sense.

The forged documents.

The attempts to isolate Ethan.

The manipulation of Victoria.

The pressure on Sarah.

The years of financial interference.

Someone had been positioning himself carefully.

Patiently.

Waiting.

For the right moment.

Then Sarah suddenly remembered something.

Her eyes widened.

“Oh my God.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Sarah stood abruptly.

Her hands trembling.

“Six years ago.”

She looked directly at Adrian.

“The day Ethan was born.”

Her breathing became uneven.

“There was another man at the hospital.”

Adrian frowned.

“What man?”

“I thought he worked for your family.”

The memory seemed distant.

Painful.

“I saw him arguing with Marcus.”

The room became silent again.

Sarah continued.

“He kept asking questions about legal guardianship.”

The investigator’s expression hardened.

“Can you describe him?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Trying to remember.

Then slowly opened them.

“Gray hair.”

“Tall.”

“Expensive watch.”

“He walked with a cane.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

Because he knew exactly who she was describing.

Richard Hawthorne.

His uncle.

His mentor.

The man he trusted more than almost anyone.

The room felt smaller.

Harder to breathe in.

Because betrayal from strangers hurts.

But betrayal from family changes everything.

Then Ethan quietly spoke.

A small voice in the middle of enormous secrets.

“Why?”

Everyone looked at him.

The boy sat beside Elena.

Confused.

Scared.

Trying to understand a world built by adults.

“Why would Uncle Richard hurt me?”

No one answered immediately.

Because there was no answer a child should hear.

Finally Elena squeezed his hand.

“Sometimes people care more about money than people.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“But he’s family.”

The sentence broke everyone’s heart.

Because children believe family means safety.

Adults know better.

At that moment Marcus finally spoke.

For several minutes he had remained silent.

Listening.

Watching.

Now he looked tired.

Older somehow.

“As strange as it sounds…”

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked directly at Ethan.

“I’m sorry.”

Nobody expected that.

Not Adrian.

Not Victoria.

Not Sarah.

Not even Elena.

Marcus lowered his gaze.

“I told myself I was protecting my future.”

His voice was filled with regret.

“But somewhere along the way…”

He looked at the little boy.

“…I forgot you were a child.”

The room remained silent.

Then Marcus reached into his jacket.

The investigator immediately tensed.

But Marcus simply pulled out a small flash drive.

And placed it on the table.

“What is that?” Adrian asked.

Marcus looked exhausted.

“The thing Richard never wanted anyone to see.”

Nobody moved.

The tiny device suddenly felt heavier than gold.

He slid it across the table.

“There are recordings.”

“What kind of recordings?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“The meetings.”

The room froze.

“Every conversation.”

“Every instruction.”

“Every plan.”

The investigator stared.

“Why did you keep them?”

Marcus gave a bitter smile.

“Insurance.”

Years of working with powerful people had taught him one lesson.

Always keep proof.

Always.

Adrian picked up the flash drive.

His hands felt strangely cold.

The investigator immediately connected it to his laptop.

Dozens of files appeared.

Audio recordings.

Documents.

Video clips.

Years of evidence.

Then one recording caught everyone’s attention.

Its title was simple.

Meeting With R.H.

Three Weeks Ago.

The investigator clicked play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice emerged.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Richard Hawthorne.

Nobody spoke.

They listened.

And with every second, Adrian’s world crumbled.

Because it was unquestionably his uncle.

And the words coming from the recording were impossible to ignore.

“If the boy becomes a problem…”

A pause.

Then:

“…remove the obstacle.”

The room went completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Even Ethan sensed something terrible had happened.

Adrian felt sick.

Because for the first time there was no doubt.

No misunderstanding.

No explanation.

Richard wasn’t protecting the family.

He was hunting it.

Then another voice appeared on the recording.

Marcus.

Asking a question.

A question that made everyone’s blood run cold.

“What if Adrian finds out?”

Richard laughed.

A slow, confident laugh.

Then came the answer.

The answer that changed everything.

“He never suspected me the first time.”

A pause.

Then:

“He won’t suspect me again.”

The recording ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Because now there was a new mystery.

A horrifying one.

What did Richard mean by…

May you like

“The first time”?
