Chapter 12 - The Judas KissThe white pill on my kitchen counter wasn't just a threat; it was a tactical demonstration. Blackwood was telling me that my fortress was an illusion.

I didn't panic. I pulled on a pair of latex gloves, placed the pill into an evidence bag, and immediately called Jax. Within thirty minutes, my entire security team was sweeping the penthouse for listening devices, while Jax reviewed the building's encrypted security footage.

“Nothing,” Jax growled, slamming his fist against the desk in my home office. “The cameras in the hallway experienced a two-minute looping glitch at exactly 11:15 PM. Whoever bypassed the biometric locks knew our exact security rotation. This wasn't a random thug, David. This was a professional. And they had inside help.”

I stared at the evidence bag on the desk. The implications were catastrophic. Nora was safe, sleeping at my brother’s heavily guarded estate in the suburbs, but the foundation was compromised.

“Someone inside Nora’s Shield gave Blackwood the security codes to my private residence,” I said, the betrayal burning like acid in my throat. “I built this place to protect people, and a rat chewed through the foundation.”

“I’ll tear the staff apart,” Jax promised, his eyes dark with violent intent. “I’ll audit every email, every burner phone, every bank account of all fifty employees.”

“No,” I said, raising a hand. A dark, razor-sharp plan was already forming in my mind. “If you launch a massive audit, the mole will go to ground, and Blackwood will know we’re onto him. We don't hunt the rat, Jax. We feed it poison, and we let it run back to its master.”

The next morning, the atmosphere at the foundation was electric. I called an emergency, closed-door meeting with my top five executives, including Sarah.

“I have a massive breakthrough on the Blackwood case,” I announced, dropping a thick, red-tabbed folder onto the conference table. I looked at each of them, projecting absolute confidence. “We managed to subpoena a confidential informant who used to manage Blackwood’s Cayman accounts. The informant is currently being held in a secure federal safehouse in upstate New York. I am flying out tonight at 8:00 PM to take his deposition. Once I have his sworn statement, the FBI will raid the institute tomorrow morning.”

Sarah smiled, relief washing over her face. “David, that’s incredible. Who is the informant?”

“I can't disclose the name until the deposition is signed,” I lied smoothly, picking up the red folder. “But this is the silver bullet. Keep this strictly off the grid. No digital communications.”

I dismissed the room.

For the next eight hours, Jax and I sat in a soundproof surveillance van parked two blocks away from our own office building. Jax had tapped the private cell phones of every executive in that room.

We waited in silence.

At exactly 4:30 PM, Jax’s monitor lit up. An encrypted text message had been sent from a burner phone pinging directly from our building. Jax ran the decryption algorithm.

“He’s flying to upstate NY at 8 PM. He has a CI from the Caymans. Intercept before he gets the deposition.”

“Gotcha,” Jax whispered, tracing the phone's origin. He looked up at me, his face grim. “It’s Chloe. The senior paralegal who handles all the intake files for Evelyn Reed’s case.”

Chloe. She had sat in my office and cried with Evelyn. She had sworn to help us tear Blackwood down.

“Bring her to the boardroom,” I commanded, my voice dropping to a freezing zero. “Empty the floor.”

Ten minutes later, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open. Chloe walked in, looking confused. The entire floor was deserted. I sat at the head of the mahogany table, shrouded in the dim lighting. Jax stood by the door, blocking the exit.

“David? What’s going on? Where is everyone?” Chloe asked, her voice trembling slightly as she clutched her briefcase.

I didn't speak. I simply slid her decrypted text message across the glass table.

Chloe looked down at the paper. All the blood instantly drained from her face. She stumbled backward, her briefcase dropping to the floor with a heavy thud.

“How much, Chloe?” I asked softly. “How much did Dr. Blackwood pay you to sell out a nine-year-old boy in a padded room? How much did he pay you to leave a pill on my kitchen counter where my daughter could have found it?”

“David, please!” Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees. “You don't understand! My husband is drowning in gambling debt! Blackwood’s people came to me... they said they would kill him if I didn't feed them your itinerary! I had no choice!”

“There is always a choice,” I said, standing up and walking slowly toward her. I looked down at the pathetic, sobbing woman. I felt no pity. Only absolute, unyielding rage. “You chose to align yourself with child abusers. And now, you are going to help me destroy them.”

Chloe looked up, terrified. “What do you want me to do?”

“You are going to send Dr. Blackwood exactly where I want him to go,” I whispered. “You are going to lead him into a trap he can never escape.”
