Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut“

“Sit down, Colin,” I ordered, my voice echoing off the glass walls with terrifying authority.
“I will do no such thing! I am leaving!” Colin snapped, turning toward the heavy mahogany doors.
“If you open that door, Mr. Mercer, you will be walking directly into the arms of the two FBI Special Agents waiting in my reception area,” Sarah stated calmly, checking her Rolex. “They’ve been enjoying the complementary espresso for the last twenty minutes. But I’m sure they’d be more than happy to come in and read you your Miranda rights right now.”
Colin froze, his hand hovering inches from the brass doorknob. The color drained from his face so fast he looked as if he might faint. Slowly, mechanically, he turned around and collapsed back into his chair, staring at Sarah in absolute, unadulterated horror.
“FBI?” Vanessa whispered, her voice barely audible. She began to hyperventilate, clutching the pearls at her throat. “David, what is happening? Why is the FBI here? I don't understand!”
“Let me help you understand, Vanessa,” I said, opening the crimson folder Sarah had placed on the table. I pulled out an eight-by-ten glossy photograph and slid it across the glass.
It was a still frame captured from a hidden security camera. It showed Vanessa and Colin sitting in my living room, sipping my expensive scotch, while Vanessa handed Colin a small, unlabeled prescription bottle.
Vanessa stared at the photograph, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.
“Two weeks ago, Nora told me that the 'vitamins' you were giving her in the morning tasted like bitter chalk,” I began, my voice a low, lethal rumble. “She said they made her heart beat too fast and made her see shadows in her bedroom. So, I took one of those vitamins to a private toxicologist. Do you want to guess what they found, Vanessa?”
She didn't answer. She was shaking so violently that her chair squeaked against the floor.
“Amphetamines mixed with a heavy, unprescribed sedative,” I continued, the rage bleeding into my tone despite my efforts to remain cold. “A toxic cocktail designed to induce manic episodes, severe paranoia, and sleep deprivation in a seven-year-old child. You were systematically poisoning my daughter right in front of me.”
“That’s a lie!” Vanessa shrieked, her aristocratic poise completely shattering. She pointed a trembling finger at Colin. “He gave them to me! Colin told me they were holistic supplements to help her concentrate at school! I didn't know what was in them! I’m innocent, David! He manipulated me!”
“Don't you dare try to pin this on me, you psychotic bitch!” Colin roared, completely abandoning his polished lawyer persona. He slammed his fist on the table. “You came to me! You told me you couldn't stand playing mommy to a defective brat for another decade. You were the one who researched the psychiatric facility. You were the one who demanded I find a doctor willing to falsify her medical records!”
“That is a lie! I love Nora!” Vanessa screamed, bursting into hysterical, dramatic tears.
“You love my bank accounts,” I corrected her, pulling a small, black digital recorder from my jacket pocket. I set it on the table and pressed play.
The audio was crystal clear. It was a recording from the hidden microphone I had installed under the dining room table after I got the toxicology report back.
“He’s signing the papers on Friday,” Colin’s voice echoed from the speaker, laced with arrogant amusement. “The Mercer-Vanguard trust is set up in the Caymans. Once the seven million clears, I’ll transfer your four million to the Swiss account, and I take my three million cut.”
“And what about the kid?” Vanessa’s voice replied, cold, calculating, and entirely devoid of empathy. “Are we sure the facility won't call him when her bloodwork clears up?”
“They won't call anyone,” Colin sneered. “The chief of psychiatry owes me a massive gambling debt. He’ll keep her heavily medicated and locked in the pediatric ward until she’s eighteen. By the time David realizes what happened, we’ll be drinking margaritas in St. Barts, and he’ll be a broken, suicidal mess.”
I hit the stop button. The silence that followed was heavier than a tombstone.
Vanessa stared at the recorder, her eyes wide with sheer, inescapable terror. The mask was completely gone. Her soul was laid bare on the conference table, and it was uglier than I could have ever imagined.
“You thought you were playing me,” I whispered, looking directly into Colin’s terrified eyes. “But while you were drafting fake contracts to steal my money, I was busy transferring every single liquid asset I own into an irrevocable blind trust managed by Sarah’s firm. The account you were trying to wire money into today? It’s a honeypot account, Colin. Fully monitored by the federal cyber-crimes division. The moment you generated the routing numbers for this fake contract, you committed federal wire fraud.”

Colin buried his face in his hands, letting out a pathetic, broken whimper. He knew it was over. He had lost his license, his freedom, and his future in the span of five minutes.
But Vanessa wasn't done fighting. A cornered snake always strikes.
